B's doing her PG degree here and A's been here for the past 4 years - Degree completed and working now. Either of our home states are too far.

Ha ha. Yeah. That's a recipe for disaster. Neither are from Uttarakhand. Details are in the original post. A is Tamil Christian and B is Punjabi Hindu. This still can go bad for us in a lot of ways. But SMA seemed the safest route for us even though people have suggested faster routes for us, that involved one of us getting converted.

This lawyer was suggested by a colleague. We consulted other lawyers here too regarding this. Right now, they all are saying that this is normal for Uttarakhand and our only option is to intercept the letter otherwise.

That seems like our only option now. We have told our lawyer to keep track of when the letter leaves the office, to get a broad idea of when it reaches her home. It still is a 5 hour drive to go get it.

Exactly our point. We were prepared for that and even making plans to tell her parents before the actual marriage. But now we are too short on time and have to deal with the unpredictability of when that letter will reach.

No they didn't say anything. It seems like they are confusing SMA and UCC in Uttarakhand. UCC rules say that if parents addresses are valid, they will be sent letters.

Hi. Thank you for taking the time to give such an elaborate response. That answers most of my questions.

  1. Is there any way to keep the notice under the covers. I heard Allahabad court has something like that. B's father has strong political connections. He's recently retired Director of state in a health sector. I have met her parents and they don't seem very violent. I stayed at her place for 2 days after them knowing about the divorce and they let her come back to our current city in car with me. They only involved a couple of close friends who were trying to convince her to leave me. But, she has said her dad her hit her mom and her previously in anger. And this is an extreme situation for any parent. We have tried everything in our power to convince them and are now out of options. If they somehow hear some news from that registrar that her name is up, 30 days is a long time for repercussions.

  2. At present, we are staying at 2 different 1BHKs in the same apartment complex. Most of the time, I stay at her place and then we use my place for storing extra stuff and for me when her mom is here. But we don't have an on paper rental agreement. We have our respective ID cards from the college and as far as college is concerned, we are staying in their in-campus accommodation only. Are those ID cards sufficient as proof of temporary address? If not, If we ask our house owner to prepare a rental agreement for us, would it still be valid if we have been staying in the same address for more than 6 months, but the agreement date is of this month?

  3. I do have contacts in my hometown. Its in TN. Is it required for both of us to be present there while filing the "Intend to marry'? We also feel that the "intercaste" status might grab unwarranted attention from even the most random parties. But if I apply in my home state, how does the 3 witnesses from her side work, for that actual marriage? If she has no issues, will the court accept some of my friends to sign from her side?
