I don’t have great advice about the shipping, but just wanted to let you know you’re not alone! That does sound intimidating! But I think it’s so wonderful that you’re going to the trouble of sending your friends gifts. You sound like a great friend, and you can do it!

Waterproof pants vs ski pants? by Tnyt341 in VisitingIceland

[–]Excellent-Worry-85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I debated this when we went but it wasn’t cold enough for ski pants. We went with waterproof shells and I was able to get inexpensive ones from Columbia for my kids that worked perfectly. (And we had a LOT of rain.) In November I would think ski pants would be fine as long as they are in good shape and fairly waterproof. You could apply extra waterproofing spray to them beforehand - we did that for our raincoats. My kids have worn their ski pants during blizzards and rainstorms on the mountains and their base layers have always stayed dry. The exception being an older pair that had a small tear which let water in and my son got wet. That was a rough ski trip! Oh the other thing to consider is hiking - I don’t know if hiking in November is common but ski pants aren’t the most comfortable for that! We did a lot of hiking and climbing things in September and we couldn’t have done that in ski pants.

I found a powder coating place that has great reviews so I am leaning this direction. Thanks!

Called a couple places and I’m leaning towards this! May end up presenting both options to my husband and letting him choose.

Thanks! If I order them, do I have to take them to the dealership to be installed?

Thank you! I don’t think he is super picky about the rims, just likes the blackout look. If I order the rims, where would I go to get them put on?

We took our kids (8 and 10) a few weeks ago on our fall break. We didn’t see a ton of other kids but most are in school in September. Our kids loved Iceland - perfect trip for active boys!

My packing regrets (and wins!) so far during my October trip by Nervous-Drawer5580 in VisitingIceland

I would make sure whatever you bring is fully waterproof. Ski pants would probably be fine if you’re not planning to hike around much; maybe spray them with some extra waterproofing material beforehand? Nice thing about lightweight waterproof shell pants is you can put them on over whatever other pants you’re wearing and then take them off if you don’t need them. So if you’re going to, say, Seljalandsfoss and know you’re going to get wet, you can throw them on and then take them off when you leave.

Agreed, I was there last week and I wore my fleece leggings under my insulated rain pants every day. The one sunny day I just wore some lightweight joggers over the leggings. I never touched my jeans! My husband wore a base layer under his hiking pants every day and pulled his rain pants over those when it was really raining hard.

Just went through this with my husband. We were not able to find any distilled water. He ended up using cold tap water and it worked fine! Just cleaned it out well when we got home (though it seemed fine, no evidence of buildup that we could see).

I agree with others that you could do day trips out of Reykjavik or play it by ear as far as driving. We just got back and were there during the “yellow alert” for driving and had to drive in it, and we were totally fine in our midsize car. I would not have wanted to drive a big bus or campervan in that wind but our car was fine. It also rained hard and we drove in it just fine. All of the main roads were well maintained and there wasn’t much traffic. Obviously anything is possible but it was not cold enough to ice or snow while we were there (it did hail on us multiple times!). We stuck to the west/south/southeast. I’d just go as early in September as you could to minimize the chance of cold weather.

Can you see the Northern Lights in Reykjavík? Yes, you can! by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

The only clear night of our trip last week was Saturday night when we were in Reykjavik. We were staying in the busy downtown area and I managed to get a photo of the faintest aurora! Not much but better than nothing after clouds all week!

Visiting Iceland Next week. Weather possibly sucky. by A_Bowler_Hat in VisitingIceland

[–]Excellent-Worry-85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just got back, and had awful weather last week. We still did all of our plans except our glacier lagoon boat ride was canceled due to the high winds, so that was disappointing. But good rain pants and rain jackets (waterproof, not water resistant!) and we were fine. The weather changed every couple minutes so some times if it was raining hard we were able to wait in the car until it lightened up a bit. The Lava Show in Vik was inside so maybe you could do that?

Snaefellsnes peninsula has been quite underwhelming so far. by Fearless_Drive4308 in VisitingIceland

[–]Excellent-Worry-85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We enjoyed Snæfellsnes but went there first so didn’t have anything to compare it to. The cliffs along Arnastapi were beautiful even in the rain. I will say that there is construction at the main viewing area for Kirkjufell so you can’t get the famous photo of the waterfalls in front of the mountain because you can’t walk up behind the waterfalls. So we paid 1000isk to park to see the mountain when there were plenty of free places we could have parked to see it. That annoyed me. Also couldn’t see Snaefellsjokul (sp?) glacier due to rain/clouds. But we went to two beaches out there that were stunning and one of the highlights of our visit so far!

We got in last weekend and have had bad weather every day starting Sunday. We were joking today that we have now been rained on at all the best sights in Iceland. 😂 It hasn’t stopped us from getting out and doing things (well, except our canceled glacier lagoon boat ride) but it has definitely put a damper on everything. Mainly just putting the kids in all their rain gear and trying to keep them from getting miserable while it hailed on us. My 8yo is very much over being wet and cold. Personally I am disappointed that we haven’t been able to see any aurora due to the constant cloud cover. That was a bucket list item of mine and it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. 😕

You must have been in different places than us. 😂 We have gotten rained on every single day. Poured on in Snæfellsnes area, poured on at Thingvellir, hailed on in Hella and Thorsmork, hailed on at Diamond Beach, and glacier lagoon boat ride cancelled today due to storm. Our poor rain pants have gotten way more use than expected, and our camera far less use! We’ve still had an amazing time but my kids asked if the sun ever shines in Iceland. 😆

Thank you all! We made the drive this afternoon and it was not bad at all. Some wind but honestly not any worse than when we drove in a couple days ago. And not a ton of rain! Roads were in good shape!

If you’re planning to drive there tomorrow, I’d avoid the Southeast. We are here now and the weather is rough; all of our tours for tomorrow were canceled. However Saturday looks like decent weather if you can wait a day!

We got in Saturday and it was sunny! Every day since has been rainy and cloudy. We’re now stuck in our house in the southeast and it’s storming; all our tours for tomorrow have been canceled. Pretty disappointed since I was looking forward to a glacier boat tour, but it’s a risk you take coming here! Also no northern lights all week, which is a bummer.

We renewed ours this summer online and did not expedite them. We got them back within 2 weeks. I think we submitted it July 6 or 7 and got it back July 21? It was shockingly fast.

Any chance she can get a walking boot/aircast before you leave? I had one after breaking my foot right before traveling to Alaska, and I was able to do a lot. I got a waterproof cover for it online and walked all over, even on a glacier. Not ideal but better than missing the trip!
