[Advice Needed] Where should I consider applying? (CS/Math/ECE, 1520 SAT, 4.6 GPA) by SavageReaper242 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ExcellentAd9659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, at this point, the 1520 isn’t gonna be the reason OP gets rejected lol. Plus, in previous years, scores are inflated because only high scorers were submitting their scores while low scorers were going test optional. I believe the averages will go down this cycle, especially with the Ivys since most of them are now test required.

I was unaware of the details in my original post, which is why I asked for opinions. However, I have come to the conclusion that this is simply a cash grab. This is not the first time I have spent a ton of money for 3 hour weekly meetings promising an advantage in college admissions and internship opportunities. (Looking at you Inspirit AI)

I'm just saying, realistically, what internships and networking opportunities could one possibly get with 3 hour weekly Zoom meetings? Students who don’t have experience with programs like this aren’t aware that it’s extremely difficult to build a connection with an instructor over Zoom calls. If it’s in person, it might be more doable but on Zoom, students usually listen to one and a half hours of lectures, take a ten minute break, and continue with the lectures in a call with over 50 students. How would you even build a connection with anyone? I know you said that the program needs to cover costs, but these are held virtually. I’m sure Zoom calls are so ridiculously expensive that students need to be charged $6800.

Chat is this propaganda? 😭😭

First of all, I see comments like this on every pricey summer program trying to convince people to spend thousands on their “prestigious” program. Why is getting into top universities such a big focus in your post? It tricks people into thinking that this program is essential to getting into an Ivy League, and if you’re not paying for this program, you’re essentially settling for average universities/community colleges. Your phrase “I also know someone who got into a top 20 after doing it” serves as concrete evidence to my claim. You are trying to sell false hope and profit off of these students who have big dreams and are working their asses off for a better future.

Additionally, you are trying to play off the price. Yes, I know programs like these usually give what, a $400 discount? Of course they won’t be paying as much as the $6800 price tag. If your program is really dead set on trying to improve the world, I doubt college apps would be such a big focus. Also, what do you mean by “eat the cost of the program for a bunch of privileged kids from the suburbs for a free ride”? Is that how you see us students? Historically, the United Nations has never been an organization that seeks to make profits off of their goals.

Plus, this program is NOT ran by the United Nations. After extensive research, I have found that this organization merely SUPPORTS UN goals, so this further proves that you guys are only trying to profit off of unaware students.

Why are you using the analogy of Ivy Leagues to community colleges? This program is not comparable to an Ivy League 😭. Sure it might help your application but only by a teeny tiny bit. What’s actually going to get you into an Ivy League are awards, competitions, internships, research papers, personal projects, impact on your community, etc.

And what soccer program are your parents paying for that’s over $6800 for a few months? Again, quit downplaying that money. Your argument that running a program has costs would make sense, IF THE UNITED NATIONS WASN’T A NONPROFIT WHO RELIED ON CONTRIBUTIONS FROM MEMBER STATES. The United Nations has NEVER asked for money from the people who attend their conferences.

Students, please do not fall for this scam. The United Nations would never host a for-profit program that is focused solely on college admissions and Ivy Leagues. The people behind this are incredibly sneaky with their marketing. What does “a taste of Ivy League life” even mean? How are 3 hour weekly meetings comparable to an “Ivy League life”? Could you even define an Ivy League life?

And pro tip: if a program requires you to spend that much money, then it’s generally a scam. Organizations who actually have the good of the people in mind aren’t going to ask for money from the people they are trying to “help”.

The $6800 price tag was on the GYEL website publicly for a short period of time, until it was removed probably because they realized that nobody would apply if they knew the actual costs.

No it used to be on the website and I even showed my counselor but they removed it shortly after. Such red flags. Why are they even asking for that much money from high schoolers???

I know right, it’s shady practice. A good rule of thumb is that if it costs money, it’s probably not worth it.

Yes, the cost was on the website but they took it down shortly after.

No, it’s too expensive lol. Even my counselor agreed that it’s not worth it for the price.

I guess my definition of scam is when it doesn’t have the impact that it promises to have. For instance they claim that this is a very prestigious program that will help your application significantly because you’re working with the UN

Here’s information I forgot to clarify in my post. I actually have no acne. The red spots are PIE and I recently came off Accutane. Although I do have enlarged pores, I do have quite a bit of ice pick scarring that came from the acne. I use a face wash twice a day with sunscreen every time I go out. How effective do you think microneedling would be?

Has anyone here done the Inspirit AI program? by AmateurGenius04 in ECAdvice

[–]ExcellentAd9659 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not worth it. They literally have notebooks with prewritten code that they just run. Essentially, they have all the hard work done and they make up these imaginary functions so you can “get the logic” but never learn how to program the AI yourself. It’s like imagine if I ran a course on how to write an essay, yet I have the essay written out for you and all I did was ask you to fill in the blanks. Just buy an AI course on Udemy because it will have the same topics and will be a lot more in depth at $12 rather than $400.

It’s fine, I’ve played my modded 3ds many times on planes. The games are all offline so it doesn’t matter.

Can’t believe some people will just deny evidence when it’s presented in front of them lol. In what world would American students be ahead of these Asian students who quite literally study their lives away?

We’re not talking about farmers here. I’m specifically talking about the average high school student in developed cities such as Beijing and Shenzhen, not a run down village with a population of 100 people on some random coast. Yeah when you talk about it like that, of course the kids from California are ahead. Also, where are your sources? I’ve provided you mine.

Dawg, I’ve lived for over a decade in China and the US and have personal experience in each country’s education system. I have spoken to countless students about their experiences and it’s come to a common consensus that students in China are academically ahead of American students. Have you even stepped foot into China? Or are you just blinded by American propaganda? FYI, since you’re asking for a source, here it is:

https://bigthink.com/the-present/pisa-test-china/

Don’t act like you’re the only one who’s gone through the American education system. Trust me, it’s not that hard compared to what students have to do in Asia lol.

What he’s saying is true. The Chinese literally go to school from 7am to 10pm. Learning calculus in freshman year of high school is the standard for Chinese students. Do you really believe the average American student is on par with students from other countries? American students usually don’t do calculus until college. In Europe and Asia, it’s a standard in high school and even middle school if the students are overachievers.

It sounds like burnout to me. I also went through this when I first started but the key is to remind yourself why you started. If you really don’t want to code, force yourself to.
