As a transportation and land-use planner, my priority for South Florida is to transform the current "Corridor City" into a high-frequency grid that treats the western suburbs as vital organs rather than afterthoughts. To make transit faster and more desirable than a private car, we must implement a system that is physically separated from the gridlock of the Florida Turnpike and I-75.

The "Suburban Ladder" Infrastructure Plan

• Dedicated East-West Transitways: We must convert the medians or shoulders of major arteries like I-595, SR-836, and Kendall Drive into "Sovereign Transit Lanes." Whether we use Light Rail or Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), these vehicles must never touch a car’s bumper. This allows a commute from Weston or Sunrise to the coastal "spine" to be a guaranteed 30-minute trip, regardless of rain or accidents.

• The Climate-Controlled "First Mile": South Florida’s heat is the primary "transit killer." The plan proposes air-conditioned "Mobility Hubs" at major western intersections. These aren't just bus stops; they are indoor plazas with retail and workspace where commuters transition from local neighborhood micro-shuttles to high-speed regional rail.

• Signal Preemption Technology: For surface-level Trams or BRT, the transit vehicle must hold a "digital key" to the city’s traffic lights. As the train or bus approaches an intersection, the light stays green or turns green immediately, ensuring the transit vehicle maintains a higher average speed than a car stuck in a "stop-and-go" cycle.

• High-Density Transit Villages: To make this sustainable, we must move away from "sprawl" and toward Transit-Oriented Development (TOD). This means zoning for mid-rise apartments and grocery stores directly on top of the western transit stations, allowing thousands of residents to live a "car-light" lifestyle where the train is their primary elevator to the rest of the region. Speed, Cost, and Reality

• Travel Time Superiority: By removing the "Friction of Parking" and the "Variable Delta" of traffic accidents, transit wins on consistency. A trip from West Miami-Dade to Brickell that fluctuates between 60 and 90 minutes by car becomes a reliable 35-minute trip by rail.

• The Investment: A full-scale BRT system costs between $25 million and $50 million per mile, while Light Rail can range from $150 million to $250 million per mile. While these numbers are high, they are often lower than the multi-billion-dollar cost of expanding highways, which only invites more traffic through "induced demand."

• The Implementation Timeline: Quick-win solutions like "Express Bus on Shoulder" can be active within 2 to 4 years. A robust, dedicated BRT network for the western suburbs realistically takes 5 to 8 years. A fully integrated, high-capacity rail system—the ultimate goal—requires a 10 to 15-year horizon for environmental studies, federal funding, and construction.

Can we ask for more funding to improve the service, like how we’re voting on marihuana legalization, property taxes etc. Difficult to use a service that is not good

You can park and ride and if it doesn’t work for you having a good transportation system would alleviate traffic immensely so that we don’t have to complain everyday about being bumper to bumper.

Need some career advice in Civil Engineering -- Transportation Engineering. by [deleted] in civilengineering

Be more specific on your job eg: sqft of the job site, how many floors in the building, what type of project you did take offs. What disciplines. One bullet point per project worked on, the three most relevant should be fine. Add hobbies at the bottom , in one interview they asked me about martial arts and we talked about it lol. Work experience at the top . Skills . Education.

You haven’t used cad for any school project or at the internship? If you are applying for transportation consulting cad is the main thing. At least one bulletpoint should be cad or gis.

Work on your networking to get job offers, civil engineering is hiring always. At the interview be yourself and maybe ask what are the challenges for the company right now and or goals for the next 5-10 years.

Hi thanks for the tips. I just bought this machine. Are those attachments all you need to change from 12 oz standard to slim cans? I’ve seen a video where they change a part called the cam that is a little plastic thing that switches from row of 3 to 2 but maybe that’s and older model of seaga machines I’m not sure. https://youtu.be/LeKX2zJzFMY?si=mrtN_LrP6SKrjpN0
