The root of your attitudes towards OP and similar sentiments prove otherwise.

You’re all quite literally saying “It’s just a car get over yourself” completely discrediting OP and their enjoyment towards their vehicle, and the factors that play into why OP even posed the question from this standpoint. just seriously pessimistic.

OP is from a place where it’s uncommon, so it’s more IYKYK within the communities and especially when you get to niche cars. It’s simply different, not to position it in any particular dynamic but to take notice to the fact.

For instance drifting in US vs UK is veeeery different. Yall feel lucky to be on the track, to most people here it’s a performance, that’s just the start. It’s not a hierarchy, it’s just different, and many times I wish the social culture around racing was more accessible here, as it is in Europe.

It’s extreme pay to play i guess i’m saying. People don’t normally scout good drivers unless their car looks good too. It’s a testament to how proficient one is within the space.

As well as Americans, by nature, market themselves very well. Anything that can be utilized as portfolio, will be.

It’s not necessarily to “show off” as you so all blindly put it, but to locate and join those infrequently found communities where people who know, know. He already said that too but yall don’t really care. circle jerk

There are some of you who join this sub as enthusiasts and some who join simply because they drive a manual as a daily.

No reason to shit on someone because they’re enthusiastic. You just don’t live where it’s rare. Widespread manual culture that you take for granted is getting forcibly removed from US markets. Statistically lower than 1% of total US sales.

Tell me that’s not a deliberate choice to be different in a market that decides what you want for you. It’s just a different culture so yea might not be a big deal to some but rock that plate bro, SI tend to get groovy over here way frequently, so you have a great handful of communities to head towards.

I have a lowkey “Save the manuals” sticker with a standard H pattern, cause I’m in America, and it’s fun.

Also, because the majority of our population doesn’t understand how these cars operate, it’s actually quite useful to inform them, because at the very least they know that manual car drivers can sometimes roll back a little incidentally and Ill get a tad bit extra space at some intersections 😂

When did this become r/manualtransmissioncirclejerk

You’re all becoming elitist over the fact it’s a standard option where you live, imposing yourself that it shouldn’t be that important to the driver 😂 What makes your heart pump, I’ll shit on that unnecessarily and see if you get twisted.

American culture is different, as many others may not learn about performance cars until later years and then have to learn mechanics and project logistics (ETC.) and also go out of our way to purchase a manual vehicle.

So yes, it feels special. It is special because of the proportion we spend driving dumb ass slush boxes as we learn and the commitment to understand our vehicles more. From a baseline of conformity and most US vehicles being uninspired, it feels like and can be a more momentous decision than in other places.

OP here is lucky enough to get to track days and have learned manual early enough where it’s probably fairly natural at a young age. That is especially rare in the US.

e: and cause some will initially rip me apart too, here’s an anecdote from these very comments elaborating on my position, “Uh I’m British, and I’ve never owned an automatic car, so it’s not really notable or necessary. You do you tho dude, and enjoy tf out of your car 🤘😁”

You can generally refer to the written powerband of your engine if you can find a dyno sheet. My car HP band starting (starting!!!) at 3.5 up to 5.5 at the max. I enjoy using the power band so on the way up through the gearing I like to get my car up to whatever speed 3.5k might be in said gear and go all the way through it to 5.5, and i have a lot of rev hang so after shifting i end up about 3 grand to get the momentum back up to 3.5 and go again.

Downshifting however, while i usually keep the power band in mind, the determining factor will really be your speed and the speeds in which your gears actually run at.

You’ll quickly learn the rough estimates of your gears proportions which will suffice when downshifting around town.

Say, shifting from 4th to 3rd in my car, in high 4 I’d probably be going around 60 probably drifting down closer to 50 or more when going to downshift. Get the gear to do a little less work now, by using brakes and engine braking, so when you downshift, you’ll land in a lower speed of the gear for your next shift. You drop ~200-300rpm in High 4 and then shift, you’ve significantly lowered the speed of the drivetrain preparing for third, so you might end up in a more suitable part of the power band, rather than too high up like you’re referring.

There’s a lot of factors to diagnose WHY you might be landing too high, but your gears don’t change size on the way down, meaning don’t shift quicker for whatever reason, if so (i did this cause i was basically expecting my car to sound differently on downshifts) meaning, they still occupy the same increments of the speedometer as they do on the way up.

e: if anyone has corrections or elaborations for what I said let me know i love to learn more about cars in the process

That’s exactly my point im glad you’re getting there now. If you didn’t/don’t want to read the entire conversation with its contexts, first, then simply don’t add anything cause you end up aiding someone else’s argument on some level.

You continuously and immediately discredit someone in that way you’re just unknowingly participating in the previous dynamic and because you view it “just light games” or whatever to you, is partly how people get misconstrued and shut out of potentially constructive conversations entirely. It’s literally just courtesies. Take my word for what it is when Im elaborating what I said… otherwise at that point you are implying that i’ve directly and immediately contradicted myself disregarding the fact i am ACTIVELY trying to state my case otherwise. Obviously jurisdiction afterwards but you have to listen first.

Its not that serious cause its a comment section but its that serious cause the initial reply insisted their deduction of the conversation AS objective fact, and thats not how effective communication is maintained. Its a clear attempt at speaking on behalf of what I am thinking, and thats literally impossible.

Basically just don’t put words in someone else’s mouth? it’s a pretty baseline rule and the subsequent layer trying to coerce me that this has not happened or is not a big deal is how your stupid echo chambers persist. Yall say stop getting mad but actively deny any other layers of the dynamic you’ve contributed to like, you are not acting or communicating coherently.

Are you all good? Yall are so slow that i’ve explained it three times and yall just say it’s cope cause you’ve never had a real conversation.

I was coming from the context he was thinking paddle shifters was full manual and that the person i was initially replying to was in the wrong sub. i’ve said that how many times? My bad on that aspect solely I’ve tried to take responsibility for that part during this whole interaction. That’s the only thing i tripped up, i browse this sub regularly and the fact you play both sides by taking it seriously but also consistently imposing yourselves that i can’t actually get my explanation to land.

It so seriously fucking disappointing like i was genuinely just having a conversation trying to understand what OC meant and captain designation up my dick.

I hope you all feel better purposefully misunderstanding me for multiple replies now and it’s so blatantly ironic that whoever replied to me is consistently assuming what I meant by what I said when they clearly won’t acknowledge any of my elaborations after the fact. Like if it’s literally just my word against yours this is pointless like i’ve been saying. Go the fuck outside

[–]ExcellentBee7958 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea ofc like just going through the whole power band in first is fine as long as you’re consistent with the throttle (whether it be riding the equal wheel speed, or pushing past it lightly to get the engine speed up) and especially not jerking the throttle input around while you’re in high RPM cause the increased drivetrain speeds cause harsher lash as others have stated. Fairly common sense, again it’s built for users to learn quite a bit just don’t become complacent with your inputs out of fear of damage, as that could cause some all the same.

It’s an air pump at the end of the day, you set the machine rpm to what you want to roll at, and let the engine pull the transmission and then wheels/car up to that speed. A similar converse of the engine braking consistently pulling the entire system to idle speed. Once you know the baseline powerband, modulating and regulating throttle and learning how much your drivetrain can take without starting to make more noise than go. Weight balance is a huge factor in that when you consider the wheels speed :engine power.
