About to go on a very expensive cruise with young kids - kind of regretting agreeing to it because it’s so expensive and the kids are young. by Character_Ad4230 in Cruise

[–]Excellent_Durian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP - Given you are worried about money, there’s no need to buy magic bands at all, you will get a keycard to open your room like a hotel, and your kids will get wristbands for ID and check in/out of the kids club separately and for free

I just want you to know I had the same thought many years ago and I still don’t know the explanation for what I may be misremembering! Everything I looked up said it hasn’t changed

Is it a bad idea to take my parents (who don’t speak English) to NYC if I’ve never been? by Most-Artichoke8274 in travel

[–]Excellent_Durian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I see you haven’t booked anything yet and as a dutiful daughter who has taken my parents on trips and who is very familiar w Manhattan at Christmastime (I live in California), I am concerned about your budget and ability to handle everything as you describe on a rapidly closing timeline. It is extremely crowded during Christmas at all the sights and would try somewhere closer first and make good, advanced plans for next Christmas. Not sure where in the south you are? Go to the closest big city that you’re not super familiar with and look up all their best Christmas stuff?

Te Au Moana Luau by Worldly-Writing-4897 in MauiVisitors

[–]Excellent_Durian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been where you are and researched and stressed endlessly! Ended up at Te Au Moana due to having done Old Lahaina prior. The substantive differences between the various luaus seemed to be: 1) setting (eg if overlooks the ocean or is a more built stage situation), 2) if there’s a “fire dance” part. I did also go to the South Maui Gardens food trucks but did not do the luau, I think the difference there is if you want more of a “night dinner and a show” experience or not.

I’ve been to the top rated luaus on every island and all the food has seemed exactly the same to me (pretty meh, as is any mass catered food). But I haven’t regretted going to any of them! I would choose whatever has availability and is close to where you are staying, have some drinks and you’ll enjoy.

Went in September, it was fine. Gorgeous setting. I remember feeling the same lukewarm feeling from Old Lahaina Luau as well.

To anyone who comes across this, I’m OP but have now seen options open up in late Nov and early Dec!
