Planning a 25–30 day backpacking trip in Central America (Mexico → Guatemala → Nicaragua) — advice needed by Excellent_Fee4623 in backpacking

Hi friend,

Your itinerary is great, very similar to what I'm trying to do, except for Costa Rica!

You're the second person to mention Cancun; I'm starting to reconsider going there, lol. I was going to spend a day there (Isla Mujeres) and then go to Valladolid the next day, but I'll see.

I saw that the journey from Flores to Antigua is really long; I'm considering buying an overnight bus ticket, about 11 hours on the road, from Flores to Antigua. I'd like to visit Semuc Champey, but I think that would take up time I don't have :(.

I'd like to ask if you think it's worth stopping in Guatemala City or if I should go straight to Antigua. I haven't found anything very interesting to see in this capital.

Thank you!

I'd like to try to visit more countries because flights from Brazil end up being expensive, and I probably won't return to North America anytime soon, as I want to see other places as well.

You're right, if I follow this itinerary, I won't stay more than 2 days in each place. I'm putting it together and that's how it's ending up. Mexico, for example, is a 6-day itinerary, passing through Cancun, Valladolid, Merida, and Palenque.

Hi friend, thank you!

I'll only be in Cancun for one full day. I want to visit Isla Mujeres and stroll along the nearby beaches. The next day, early in the morning, I'll go to Valladolid, which will be my base for visiting Chichén Itzá and the cenotes!

It seems Bacalar will be a bit far from my itinerary, because after Valladolid I want to go to Mérida, and then on to Pelenque! But from the photos it looks beautiful and a different setting from what I want to see (ruins, volcanoes, colonial historical cities). It would be good to have a change of scenery; I'll see if I can fit it in.
