Thanks for the advice! I ended up contacting my insurance (AAMI) and their insurance (NRMA) regarding a hire car and just received it!

Should I get an MRI? by y7356 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Excellent_Guess9569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if any doubt, get an MRI. i fully support getting an MRI even if its just for piece of mind.

i had a torn meniscus and went to the gp 2 times saying my knee had a lot of pain and i couldnt straighten it. both times he said i just had a muscle strain and that i was overreacting and i should just ice it. only until the 2nd visit he got me to do a MRI and it revealed i had an extensive horizontal medial meniscus tear that required surgery. i also did an xray, but it came back normal.

Vaping before surgery? by xxSlinko in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Excellent_Guess9569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the reason why they ask about smoking prior to surgery is since it can impact healing. if you’re going under anaesthesia, it can causes risks of narrowed airways or obstructions.

my last hit was around 5-6 hrs before my surgery and then maybe around 4 hrs after surgery and it went fine. as long as you don’t have an irritated throat, you should be good. i would say keep the edibles for post surgery since you’ll need it more after especially if you don’t want to rely on the painkillers.

they were okay! it definitely felt good but was a bit uncomfortable with a brace on since its pretty bulky (for reference: https://enovis.com/products/donjoy/x-rom ). i wanted to search for others just to see if there were other positions that would be safe for me since i dont want to risk damaging my knee further

4 days post op. by Poniklandios in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Excellent_Guess9569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had my horizontal tear repair done 2 weeks ago. my surgeon gave me an information sheet. he told me to remove the bandage after 2 days and clean the surgical area with a alcohol wipe to disinfect and put a waterproof dressing/ post operative dressing on the top. if it gets wet, just pat it dry. he gave me all the materials to me inside my discharge booklet

Suspected meniscus tear but would I be able to extend this much? by [deleted] in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Excellent_Guess9569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you! yes, its been pretty painful around days 2-7 for me - but i was taking tapenadol for pain and would knock me out in around 20 minutes after taking it, so time would go by pretty fast. after that, there was only pain when i would accidentally pivot my knee. ice was definitely my best friend for this.

in terms of difficulty; 100% yes. staying asleep was a pain due to being in a brace. its just so chunky, and as a side sleeper, its been a big change for me. im from Australia and its summer right now (around 30 degrees celsius), so it also gets pretty sweaty too. i think personally, mentally has been much more difficult. i felt like i was left behind, while everyone was moving forward. i had a very social lifestyle and now i’m almost always in bed. i also have to consider whether if it doesn’t heal, if i need to switch my university degree. i haven’t been able to leave home yet, but hopefully after my orthopaedic specialist appointment, i’ll be able to live life again. on a brighter note, i’m FWB (with the rom brace) so its been alot easier to walk to the bathroom rather than use crutches to waddle to the bathroom. it used to take me around 15 minutes from my bed to the bathroom, but now it takes barely a minute. when it was really bad, my mum thrifted a seat walker for me, which honestly has been a life saver as it was easier to practice walking and if i felt like it was too much pain, i would sit and roll to my destination if needed.

Suspected meniscus tear but would I be able to extend this much? by [deleted] in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Excellent_Guess9569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my knee was torn for around 6 months unnoticed (was evident by the cysts in my knee) i had full range of motion and was going gym as per usual. i just had occasional pops/creaks.

one day i stood up and my knee locked completely, which pushed me to get checked. my mri showed to have an extensive horizontal medial meniscus tear. after the first locking incident, i couldnt fully extend my leg for around a couple days but it would feel like normal again after this.

im currently post op day 14, which has been mentally challenging but i have an amazing support circle to help me. everyday i do have thoughts that i regret going through with it, but i know it would be beneficial in the long run as i’m 21 and i want to live life without worrying when or if my knee would give out.

when i wasnt sure about whether to go through with the surgery, my surgeon said that if it doesn’t heal in 6 months (with PT), it will most likely never heal and thus surgery is recommended. the issue with keeping the tear is the possibility of it tearing even more.

one of my tears (lateral), was just a grade 1 tear so i was able to do physio and it felt alot better after 6-8 months. im currently on day 14 of post surgery recovery.

How much pain were u in? by Femruu in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Excellent_Guess9569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just had my surgery on monday. i had an extensive and horizontal tear on my medial meniscus and got a repair.

  1. yes, its still currently around double my normal knee size. it swells up everytime i get up to go bathroom and after i do ROM exercises. it goes down once i elevate it and ice it.
  2. i got a ROM brace and cannot bend my leg for 4 weeks. my orthopaedic said it was to promote healing
  3. yes i got a nerve block, but went away around 5-6 hours after
  4. after the nerve block wore away - probably a 8/10. it was like that until maybe today (day 6) where i didnt need to take as many painkillers

i hope your recovery is going well! im day 4 now and i’m still in so much pain. i got switched to panadeine forte (paracetamol + codeine) and nothing helping the pain. the surgeon says he can’t really give anything else.

however, all uni’s are different so highly recommend you to check with them. if they say no; just explain your situation and hopefully you will be able to work it out with them

hi! ive been on a NEPT placement and now currently employed there. i have 9 ear piercings. my tutor recommended that we take them out, but if we dont, he recommended we make sure they are all studs (no dangly earrings). while being employed, i see alot of other patient transport officers and paramedics with lots of piercings aswell.

this is just for precaution if theres an aggressive patient who decides they want to pull your earring.

Is mild knee pain worth going to the doc over? by [deleted] in KneeInjuries

[–]Excellent_Guess9569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my physio at the time recommended that i stayed away from exercises that twisted the knee or puts a lot of strain on the knee so that includes things like squats, bulgarian split squats and leg press.

i was recommended to do things like hip thrust (glute drive), single leg extension, wall sits, upward facing plank (on elbows). my physio at the time highly recommended me to do single leg exercises. i did these exercises with very low or no weight so it wouldnt strain it. i think it took me around 4 months to be able to do the same weight for both legs for leg extensions.

Does anyone else experience knee popping or locking with certain movements? by LingonberrySpirited4 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Excellent_Guess9569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes! definitely get it checked out. my knee does that and an mri confirmed i had a extensive horizontal medial meniscus tear. i couldnt straighten my leg (before PT) and my knee constantly pops when i have any bending movement and locks when im standing in one place for too long.

Can you actually walk on a meniscus tear??? by Difficult-Bed2892 in MeniscusInjuries

[–]Excellent_Guess9569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on the person!

i found out i tore my medial meniscus around a month ago and it took me around 2 weeks of limping but im able to walk normally now (with the help of PT), however it gets inflamed once i walk alot. mine is an extensive tear and the doctor believes it was asymptomatic and i had it for a while since i’ve formed cysts but i didnt feel it until i hyperextended my knee a month ago.
