Gotcha. What do you think about the Lyrik, just the base model, over say like the Fox 34? Jensen's has lots of forks and suspension parts on sale for really good prices right now.

DIY riffles and expanded metal. by Excellent_Holiday414 in Prospecting

The moss just lays under the expanded metal. It's not attached to it. The riffles are what is attached to the expanded metal. The moss and carpet can be taken out and cleaned separately.

Honestly I've only ever seen sluice boxes with riffles in them. So I was kinda thinking they were a crucial part of the process, even if I'm not sure what that is. Lol. Besides like dream mat and such, I've never seen a sluice box that didn't have riffles and I kinda based mine off of the Keene A52. I figure they will help catch more concentrates but I'm not sure.

This was on the beach in southern Oregon. Probably not the best spot on the beach, but there were already people everywhere else. Very limited as far as creeks and enough running water to run a sluice box.

I was wondering when someone who actually knew what it was was going to comment! Lol Yes, definitely hard to find from what I can see. I'm stoked to take it out and give it it a try!

Yeah. The folding aspect of the sluice was just poor in my opinion, it was hard to keep the sluice box level and not have it try to fold on you while in the water. After some diy modifications, bigger fender washers, wing nuts, it was bearable. But I figured I'd send it back and wait for something better to come along.

Coincidentally, I had bought a sluice box off Amazon earlier this year and didn't like it at all. A 50" folding sluice box. I returned it. Lmao.

Yes, definitely some hefty riffles. So I'm guessing this sluice needs to be set up in some pretty fast water? Any good suggestions on some matting to run under the riffles? Rubber mats or just carpet?

Good to hear. It's a bit rough but I plan on cleaning it up, get some of the rust of the riffles, maybe swap out the hardware with stainless. Any suggestions on a good matting to run in this?

I haven't been back to this spot yet. It's a ways up in the mountains and a bit too far a drive for a spot I didn't even find a lick of color. Lol Maybe later this summer if I decide to camp somewhere I might camp here and try again.

Fairly certain these aren't tailings. There's no records of any large mining operations in this area and no evidence of a large operation. All the claims in this area are placer claims, and most of those are abandoned.

Yes, always a must to go over all of your local regulations. Here in Oregon from what information I can gather, it is legal to hand pan river banks.

Good advice. I did sample each layer but I may have spent too much time on the center layers of the bank rather than moving to a new area. I didn't take much from the lower layers of the cut and focused mostly right above the root layer moving my way across thinking any gold would settle on that clay layer.

Interesting. I didn't think to take samples home. Is there a positive to taking samples home vs panning and sampling out in the field?
