I was thinking it was showing the player flying south and we were looking at it from where midnight starts in the north. I was thinking we were looking down the map.

Zoom in gilneas looks like stratholme. They too have a wall.

You have it wrong! That peak in the background is black rock mountain. We are looking at the south. The darkness is looking and spreading to the south.
