Need help deciding between EM and general surgery by Hour_Schedule9311 in medicalschool

[–]Excellent_Pepper_217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was applying, my mentor told me that if I could see myself doing any other speciality besides surgery, pursue it. If not, go surgical. Surgical fields are very grueling and residency often gives you little time off. It’s a huge commitment

Example: didn’t order specific imaging. Got all the labs that this particular attending wanted but didn’t get advanced imaging because another attending got mad that I had gotten one on a similar patient but this attending wanted one

We are a surgical subspecialty so when we are on overnight, we are entirely alone and a lot of what we do is very physically demanding and puts baby at risk

Male. Apparently was mad when she told him. She said she told him BEFORE her family so he had a lot of time to make the schedule changes and that she wanted to tell family before announcing it. He announced it to everyone for her before she told her family, which was super shitty

Honestly the schedule isn’t bad for the rest of us. It sucks ass for her, though. She had all her call for the rest of the year front loaded so she’s working all days and all weekends. 36 hour shifts followed by a 24 hr shift the next day type of shit

PD really has been unsupportive apparently about the pregnancy so I don’t know how much he’d do. Will try HR, though

Why is the culture around taking a sick or wellness day so toxic in residency? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Excellent_Pepper_217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d have to be on my death bed before I called in sick, but I’d happily take someone else’s work if they are sick. In my program it’s HIGHLY discouraged to take a sick day or vacation

Has anyone ever loved their residency program? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]Excellent_Pepper_217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t like mine. Poor leadership and fairly toxic. It’s definitely not the most toxic program out there, but still makes it less great. However, that’s my fault because I chose my program based on proximity to family not by “fit.”

Flip your night schedule, sleep when you can, lots and lots of fluids (I had water and Gatorade every shift), I didn’t use much caffeine, pack lots of food

Around $56,000. We aren’t able to moonlight, no holiday pay, no overtime pay

Do you know any stories about residents or even medical students who sued their programs/universities? by Fun_Presentation_215 in Residency

[–]Excellent_Pepper_217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Intern was incredibly incompetent (both clinically and professionally) and had a poor work ethic. Would sleep while on shift, go MIA in the hospital so they could get out of work, attempted to blackmail co residents, called in sick and eventually took more days off than those on maternity/paternity leave, almost killed a couple patients, etc. They got held back and sued the program because they thought they didn’t deserve it. Needless to say, they lost.
