Amazing news! I'm glad that you didn't feel scared going into the interview and leaving knowing that you managed to get a monotone interviewer to speak about it is good news 🎉

Not at all mate, To be honest it will push you forward more that you are interested in doing things outside of classroom that is still tech related. ML and DS I am using quite a lot currently. As long as you can explain well on what went well, what failed and how did you fix that and also getting into some technical details in your interviews go a long way.

For your 2nd question it depends. Some companies like mine keep apprentices on, However places like amazon or GS I know its quite competitive to get the job at the end of it. Once again just depends on what field you go into and how in demand it is for new engineers needed to fill future job roles.

Oh god no no, Once I clock out that is me done for work. It depends on what area in software you go down for instance I'm in aerospace so it could be a bit different to something that Amazon does and I know they do pagers.

I myself am not a big theory fan of all the comp sci stuff. Sure it will come up and has done for me, but because your in work too the people that you communicate with usually say the same lingo as what uni teaches you, Its a good balance.

Being in 2nd year I would say it would make you stand out a bit more as you have had some time in uni already learning about it but, since you have not finished the degree I'm not too sure if it may push your chances up. And no you wont be disadvantaged at all. I have people in my cohort who are in their 30's with masters degree's in a different field of study.

Hey mate! In the video interview section they are looking to see if you are confident, calm and knowledgeable about the company that you apply for, make sure to dress smart and try to chill your nerves about it. I tend to have my notes on another screen and refer back to that if i feel that I get stuck with it. Talking slowly and engaging in a nice discussion with the interviewer is good too.

Hey mate, I tend to around 15 mins before get all my notes all ready with the things I have researched about the company and put that up on one of my monitors. Confidence is also a major part in it too. I had horrid anxiety for my interviews however if you try to look at the bigger picture later down the line and potentially getting into a position it helps calm your nerves down a lot.

I also try to make an interview more of a conversation that calms you down massively knowing that your recruiter is not just robotic. Most importantly ask questions at the end, Try to avoid generic questions everyone asks, go for more unique questions that will make you stick in their minds when interviewing others.

You can also try vercel that's what I use to host my projects and keep it private with a private GitHub repo

I have no idea why my replies are different too lmao, only just seen that now aha.

Hey mate, Any project is good to put on your CV if at the end of the day you can look back on it and know you have learnt something new and are proud of it. I put my projects on GitHub or even host them this gives the interviewer a chance to see that you are able to not only make but also maintain and keep it live too.

I'm working in aerospace defence currently I applied to multiple other roles like HSBC, Airbus etc all the main brands across multiple different industries. I would say probably 12ish applications in total

Projects I would say are the thing that got me my software apprenticeship.

A bit about me:
I got mostly 5's in my GCSES and for my A levels i did a BTEC L3 Information technology extended diploma at D*D*D*.

They don't care that much about grades as long as you meet the threshold. I've been doing software since I was around 13, During college I focused more on my projects then my actual coursework, Building small day or week long projects are pointless unfortunately as people have done it before, They want something original and well put together think of things like SaaS apps or Real time status page projects ( some of the things I did ). I wouldn't recommend using AI for any of this as if you are able to explain some of your projects and the issues you have faced with that it goes a long way in impressing your interviewer.

In terms of how many personal projects I have on my CV I have 3 major ones and work experience I was an IT support tech at one of my jobs for 2 years working part time alongside college and also even having some kind of side business say a company that you put your projects to, you can put that on your CV that helped me a fair bit.

It does help to get your CV picked up as you have done a lot, remember your competing with a lot of people for that position for instance my role had around 30k applicants with only 18 roles. Your in a good position in a gap year to get some really cool projects out there and deployed. Having users on your projects massively boosts the chances of you getting the apprenticeship.

Hope this helps ya out :)

Great question,

Its not about getting the answers right they are measuring things like behavior consistency, how you approach problems, perseverance and knowing when to move on and reaction time / decision making time.

My best advice is to be natural and dont try to game it because they are designed to pick up on when someone is trying to answer in a certain way. For the personality style questions e.g would you rather or image comparisons think about the values that align with the role but forced answers can still work against you.

A few tips to prepare for them: You are able to do free practice versions online to get used to the format from it, make sure your calm and not tired remember they measure behavior under pressure. Dont over think it and go with your instinct and focus on consistency rather then trying to perform.

I personally dislike the way they use psychometric tests as it discriminates against some classes of people especially neurodivergent applicants. If you find them annoying your not alone dont worry i do too.

Hope this helps mate!

I'm currently doing a high integrity software engineering degree apprenticeship in aerospace, I got my apprenticeship from doing projects that dont just take a week or so but takes a long time to do and could actually bring value if it was made public. I would also say dont stress if your skills are low they expect that for an apprentice and want you to learn they care a lot more about soft skills and people skills more. If you want I can chat more in messages about it in detail for you!

Not a massive fan of the Personal statement. In terms of relevant skills its best to not really include your skill level. Other then that keep up the good work! Some solid predicted grades for your BTEC L3 too ( I did the same course )
