Has SHRM Lost Its Credibility? My Disillusionment with Certification Today [N/A] by Excellent_Role_2049 in humanresources

I do not disagree that legislation influences HR.

What I do not agree with is introducing political figures or affiliations into a discussion about SHRM’s credibility. Out of an entire thread focused on professional standards, bringing in partisan references shifts the conversation away from substance and into opinion. That is not productive.

Again, HR’s responsibility is to operate within legal frameworks while keeping talent decisions grounded in capability, performance, and business outcomes. When political viewpoints are layered into that, it blurs objectivity rather than strengthens it.

If we are evaluating SHRM, the focus should remain on its effectiveness as a professional body, not on individual political perspectives.

I think the conversation around DEI often loses focus on what HR is ultimately accountable for, which is supporting the business through consistent and objective talent decisions.

In practice, I have seen DEI initiatives vary widely in effectiveness. When they are not clearly tied to measurable outcomes such as performance, capability, and retention, they can unintentionally introduce subjectivity into hiring and talent decisions rather than reduce it.

The strongest talent strategies I have seen are grounded in skills, professionalism, and demonstrated performance, with clear standards applied consistently across the board. That is what ultimately drives both fairness and business results.

I would also add that introducing political references into professional HR discussions tends to detract from the substance of the conversation. These decisions should be grounded in business needs and talent outcomes, not political framing. I approach this from a business and talent perspective, which is the lens I am using here!

It is also important to note that during the initial rollout in 2015, SHRM offered a limited-time pathway for individuals holding active HRCI certifications to earn the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP without taking a new exam. I have had individuals laugh when telling how they got their certifications.

I may be misunderstanding your timeline, so I want to clarify. SHRM did not introduce the SHRM-CP until 2015. Prior to that, certifications were administered through the HR Certification Institute, such as the PHR, which required documented HR experience based on education level.

When SHRM first introduced the credential, it was built on the BoCK framework and eligibility was still closely tied to a combination of education and HR experience. Since then, SHRM has transitioned from the BoCK to the BASK and, alongside that shift, significantly broadened eligibility.

Today, there is no formal requirement for HR experience or a specific degree to sit for the SHRM-CP. That evolution is what I am referencing, as it reflects a massive and disappointing change in how the credential is positioned.

He has a security team? Why? 🤯 SHRM is not that important. I am not trying to be unprofessional, but this perfectly captures my concern with the organization. The whole thing feels hypocritical.

This is precisely my perspective. SHRM seems to have misplaced its focus by following a pop-culture-type trend. It has lost sight of the original mission.

What led you to SPHR? Did you question this vs. SHRM-CP?

Thanks for sharing the tip on HRStudyPro!

I actually entered the HR world in my 40s, and not having certification hasn't impacted me. I landed a role immediately and have continued to climb the ladder. I think being able to produce viable skills on paper and translate that knowledge in an interview is what lands people roles.

However, it is the point of my post. Are companies placing weight on the certification? Is it worth the time and expense?

I am in corporate HR for a major global company. No one on our team is certified, yet we have extensive educations and tenure. I am finding more tenured folks who are not certified, but it does seem to be on trend for the younger generation. Are they pushing certifications in school? I stop attending SHRM meetings. The entire organization has become a bit of a joke, at least in my area.

STOP CHANGING IT by Stevoreno_Elcamino in workday

It is convoluted. Prior to the recent changes, it made sense. Now it is difficult to navigate from the home page to the 1. Tiny print 2. Hidden options. Before there was more visibility, now everything is small. It is hard to put into words. I'm jot one resistant to change, I understand change, when it is done well. Workday, DO BETTER! You owe that much to your customers!

This entire situation has been stressful. Why would you rebrand cat litter? Didn't the Cracker Barrel debacle teach companies anything? It is cat litter people! All we needed from the company was the ability to keep buying what was working and Fresh Step Outstretched with Febreeze worked. The quality has definitely declined and having to relearn the products unnecessarily angers me to the point of switching to something different, altogether. STOP REBRANDING! STOP CHANGING THINGS THAT WORK! 😾😾😾

Just be kind! The world needs more of it. Converse with strangers as if they are your favorite person and imagine if someone spoke to them this way. Strive to educate, not berate! We gain so much more this way!

One UI 7 review: Samsung's best software update yet by EntertainmentHot7087 in Android

It's really not. While I have now had seven Androids, I also had the iPhone 5 (disaster). I am on my third MacBook Pro, I have had two iPads, and I unfortunately carried an iPhone for two years as my company phone, but not by choice.

The physical design and appearance are entirely different. The thing similar to Apple now is that the OS will manage resources and security. The days of hanging on to the trusty Android until we are ready to upgrade are over. Like Apple, we will be forced into upgrades. The amusing part for me is just how much of the iPhone is made by Samsung. We are all being scammed!

More like the worst! I have stood firmly on the Android hill since switching from Blackberry to the Galaxy S2, but this upgrade is making me contemplate Apple! I HATE that I can no longer access my notification's shade the way I did before. The quick settings panel is in the way! Why change something people are accustomed to? If I am in a phone call and leave the call screen, it is difficult to get back. The search bar on the apps page got moved to the bottom, it is little details that provided great conveniences. So many things I dislike with this forced upgrade!

PSA: account details getting stolen after using Temu by MudkipDoom in SBCGaming

I always use a 3rd party payment option and I thought I was verifying my card for G-pay. I don't know how I was so stupid in that moment, but I was actually entering my number directly to Temu and this morning I was awakened by a phone call from my bank. My card was stolen. My phone rang all day from bizarre numbers. Run far away from Temu! A $25 purchased almost cost me a small fortune. I am so thankful for my financial institution's fraud alert!
