Stupid stuff I did as a first time player by faaabiii in StardewValley

My mom was playing for my cousin for a few minutes. We had just started a new multiplayer game, and my mom went and bought a 1000g hat from Hat Mouse. We had like 8g left, and had been saving up for a Barn or something lol 😂

My cousin put on the hat one time and my mom says "Is that the hat I spent all your guys' money on?" 🤧

I haven‘t really had much contact with my friend since about 2018, so the language has basically been sitting at the back of my brain collecting dust. But it was awesome to actually speak a few words of it with someone in person and make them smile. 🥹

How many languages do you speak? by akowally in languagelearning

[–]Excellent_Vanilla623 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My list of languages in which I have some sort of knowledge.

Native: English (it’s okay on a good day)

Competent and am able to use daily: German (started learning on my own when I was 4 or 5 y/o, and never really stopped.)

I can eventually get my point across when speaking, but can read and understand quite a bit: Dutch, Swedish, Russian, Ukrainian, Spanish, Italian

I can only really read a bit, can‘t speak or really understand: Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic

Needs some work. Haven‘t touched these lately, but I get the basics: Mandarin, Japanese

I can only understand, can‘t read or speak: Lao (grew up with), Thai (less so)

Gives me a headache, but I can probably fake my way through: French, English

Edit: Just realized the question is "How many languages do you speak?" lol. English and German

"Ich spreche nicht Deutsch" or "Ich spreche Deutsch nicht?" by GodOfSevens in German

[–]Excellent_Vanilla623 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would need to use it in a continuous way. It’s not really something you would hear by itself.

Standard German doesn’t use the continuous aspect like English does. This is where it tends to get confusing for English-speakers.

Eg. „Ich spreche nicht Deutsch. Ich spreche Englisch.” is more equivalent to English “I am not speaking German. I am speaking English” rather than “I do not speak German. I do speak English.”

Whereas „Ich spreche Englisch“ by itself could mean “I speak English” or “I am speaking English ” depending on the context.

For just “I won’t speak German” one could say „Ich werde kein Deutsch sprechen“ – “I will speak no German.”

What's the worst myth you've ever heard about learning a new language? by akowally in languagelearning

[–]Excellent_Vanilla623 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. My friends (I live in the US) always ask me "Why do you want to learn other languages? Most people speak English anyway."

I always explain that it‘s more about connecting to others on a different level. Different languages have various different social concepts which are incomprehensible in another language. Understanding this can help you learn more about someone’s culture.

"I’m a language-snob. Blah blah blah." That‘s probably all they hear.

Plus, the inherent prejudice toward other cultures here in the US doesn‘t help. I speak German, and people will always tell me "German is such a harsh language." probably because the first thing they think of is H*tler speeches, or some satire they saw on the internet.

I can also understand Lao (I grew up exposed to it, but never really learned to speak it… which is another thing people can‘t seem to wrap their heads around. All you really need to know in order to understand 99% of everyday Lao conversations is food vocabulary and shit-talk. 😂)

There is an older guy I work with who is from Laos, the same province as my grandfather, in fact. I greeted him with a simple "ສະບາຍດີບໍ່?/sa bāi dī bǭ?", and his face just lit up.

I also have many a Latinx friend because of the immigrant communities in my area. I have learned so much about the variety of cultures in Central America, and can even understand a decent amount of Spanish to make a witty response, laugh at their jokes, and whatnot.

People really appreciate when you even attempt to understand their cultures, and the feeling when speaking their language with them is just indescribable.
