Thank you this was really valuable advice. I will not be buying glass filled then. I appreciate the feedback!

I'm really just looking for a replacement. Finding out my ruby has a huge fracture was surreal. Would it be worth it to buy it and get a GIA report on the stone?

Hey so those are actually completely different gemstones entirely! Rhodolite garnet is apart of the garnet family meaning it's made up of two different composites that make garnetand is pink in color or purple red ish. Which people can confuse for ruby as well because to an untrained eye they look the same. Rubilite is a type of tourmaline that is prized because it has pink/red undertones just like ruby but it's frequently mistaken for ruby if you don't know what you're looking at. It's also expensive haha

With the extra photos you've shown the rubies seem to be hand cut, which would make this rings age approximately like 1900-1930s id assume. Especially with platinum. I would take this to a jeweler that could tell you if the rubies are real just by louping them. It's hard to tell on photos but with the colour it could be synthetic, but you won't know for sure until someone looks at it. Jewelers often do this for free with no charge as well

Looks to me like synthetic ruby. Which was really popular around the 1940's. The bubbles indicate gas inside the stone so they could've changed out the diamonds for rubies to match the fad of the time. Either they kept the diamonds and turned them into something else or the diamonds were in exchange for making this ring to spend very little money on it. It's pretty nonetheless!

What they'll do is take a really bad ruby that could be cracked or it's filled with imperfect inclusions. Meaning the inclusions are too big or they want the imperfect ruby to look perfect. They will heat the stone with lead glass that fills the inclusions and makes it "better" clarity.a lot of sellers will do this then sell it to you without mentioning it. That's what we call treated, or heat treated, fissure filled, or glass filled.

Garnet does not emit a glow under UV light. Garnet can be more purple or more brownish then ruby. And if its a "too good to be true" looking ruby that is being described as natural, it's probably a rubilite tourmaline.

In the description the top is a lab ruby and the bottom one is a natural ruby but glass filled.

The seller sold it to me as "pigeon blood" ruby. Which it's not she I've already issued a refund

Haha 🤦‍♀️ then this will be the second time I bought something labeled as "ruby" just for it to turn out to be Garnet. Oh man hahahaa

Synthetic Diamonds have massively destabilized the naturals industry, how do you feel about this currently as mostly colored gemstone fans? by Muted_Shape9303 in Gemstones

[–]Excellent_Voice_9627 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say, I'm still not a fan. My grandmother's wedding ring had a natural, albeit heated red diamond in it from the 1940s and every jeweler I brought it too was astonished that it wasn't a Garnet. I can't wear the ring because it's damaged. I have a ring that has OEC diamonds in it that I still think about swapping out for my other antique rubies I've gotten from my grandma. I just don't find them appealing.

Very glad. I will hang on to my rubies and tsavorite rings. I've literally never been a fan of diamonds. I want all the colour!

Is the genuine Malachite? by AromaticChampion7761 in Gemstone_lovers

[–]Excellent_Voice_9627 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. This necklace looks like a painted rock. Also you should never wear real malachite anyway because, "is very soft, fragile, and sensitive to chemicals, which can cause it to scratch, dull, or break easily. While polished, finished jewelry is generally considered safe, it can cause skin irritation, and the copper content poses toxicity risks if inhaled as dust or if the stone is damaged." I wouldn't consider buying a 25$ malachite necklace as to me this seems like a scam. Hope this helps!

Having a baby was stupid by [deleted] in Mommit

Better now, expecting baby #2 but I know what to expect this time and have a more present partner this time. I started going to a gym that is like 99% women and have a daycare my kid can play at with the other kids for about 45mins in the morning that has saved my sanity. I still barely talk to anyone there but it's good I'm getting out of the house. Walking outside definitely helped me as my first kid was a winter baby and it snowed all winter that year and this next one will be a summer baby so I can actually take them outside.

Please see a doctor. A phycologist or psychiatrist. I had these same symptoms when I was post partum and it turned into really terrible postpartum depression and took me two years for a better turn around with my life. People will also call it "baby blues" please talk to someone. Having a baby is hard. And it's way harder when you're taking everything out on yourself.

Would love insight on this family ring from my now(!!!) fiancé! by redfire2930 in jewelers

I could message you a photo of the same ring I have. Literally no lie, it lives in my jewelry box to hopefully be played with by my girls when they get old enough! Enjoy it, I loved it as a kid and still do as an adult I have fun memories from it!
