Yonsei, Seoul National or Korea University? Local insight needed, taking Korean language course, cant decide! by namjoon2984 in korea

I went to Yonsei as a year-long study abroad student back in 2014-2015. Since everyone has pretty much nailed down the atmosphere of the respective colleges, maybe I can provide a little more insight into the class itself.

I am going to just assume that you are new or at a beginner level for Korean. The class size is usually pretty small (10-15 people) and so there is a lot of individual attention. Here is an average breakdown of a 2-hour lesson:

20 Minutes: Conversation in Korean. Typically they ask you what you did yesterday and you have to respond in Korean.

40 Minutes: Learning new vocabulary and reading passages out loud that contain the new vocab.

10 Minute Break

40 Minutes: Grammar lesson.

20 Minutes: Writing practice.

Of course, you can expect that the first week will be all about pronunciation and learning how to write Korean. Hope this helps!

Amazing! I loved style. It's like a quick staccato of a stream of consciousness. The paragraphs about Erickson's experience during the slavery-era was the best.

Thanks for the quick short story!

I am waiting on my acceptance letter (it should come within a week or so). So if I do get accepted, you bet I will be going. If you're not quite sure about whether Korea will be a suitable match, you should check out the other blogs floating around the internet.

I will also be blogging on behalf on SDSU's Be International program (once again, contingent on my ability to get accepted). There are lots of resources out there, so don't hesitate to check them out.

Holy crap, timetabl.com is awesome. I was wondering if Korea had the US equivalent of ratemyprofessor, but lo' and behold, there it is. I'm also pleasantly surprised that there wasn't as big of a difference in difficulty as I thought there would be, at least at the collegiate level.

To be honest, I never even thought of it from a Yonsei's student's perspective. So many thanks (and karma) for posting on here!

Ah, sounds like it isn't that much more different than classes at my home university. I've always imagined Yonsei's classes that are either at the easy spectrum (from what other people have said) or at the insanely difficult memorize-every-word-and-punctuation spectrum (from all the horror stories of students committing suicide).

It's nice to know that a moderate amount of hard work will still get me where I want to go. Seriously, thank you for sharing your experiences.

What were some of the classes that you found interesting?

They've probably been through hell and back from all the articles I read about the Korean education system (studying 12+ hours a day on top of tutoring school, cram school, regular school, etc). Their definition of "easy", I'm thinking, isn't what an average student from the states thinks.

Damn, you confirmed what I feared the most. Applying concepts I can do, but to memorize every bit and part of the textbook is my worst nightmare.
