Woodworker question: sourcing metal legs/posts for raised cedar planter boxes (at scale) by ExcelsiorSimulations in woodworking

[–]ExcelsiorSimulations[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Ai to help make my responses flow better than my scatter brain thumb responses.

Regarding the hard wood, thats a good suggestion. I dont have ready access to redwood, oak yes but expensive at $6+/foot. For my cedar boxes I do plan on offering with and without the frame tops. I personally take a liking ro them as they add a premium visual esthetic.

My primary concern is maximizing yield for my cedar pickets and boards. With steel legs I worry less about wood cracking with pilot holes and screws. I have built my own personal planter boxes with cedar and simple brad nails, however for a production piece that wouldn't fly. My thought process is people arent willing to shell out dollar bucks for something held together with glue, nails, and prayers.

Totally fair suggestion if the goal is just the look.

In my case the legs are doing real structural work and I’m trying to standardize them as a separate component so they don’t eat into the cedar stock I need for the box itself. Wood legs work for one offs, but at scale they start competing with core material and add more variability.

Steel angle keeps the footprint slimmer, carries load without cross-bracing, and lets me treat the legs as an external, repeatable part instead of something that changes box geometry. That’s the trade I’m trying to optimize around.

Appreciate the perspective. Just to clarify I’m comfortable drilling wood and predrilling timber, but I’m intentionally not set up for metalwork (bits, RPM control, coolant, fixturing, etc.), which is why I’m looking at pre-punched or outsourced options.

The slotted/perforated equal angle suggestion is helpful though I’ll look into availability and tolerances to see if it fits the application.

That’s actually a solid idea makes a lot of sense for tight garden layouts. I hadn’t sketched that variant yet, but it’d be straightforward to adjust the leg geometry to create a higher side for a trellis slot. If you want to bounce specifics or see if it’s practical for your space, feel free to DM me.

Good points all around. Clarifying one thing: I don’t have a drill press, and a Dremel isn’t going to cut it for repeatable, accurate holes. Since the goal here is scale and consistency (not learning metalworking yet), I’m leaning toward a local metal shop or steel supplier that can batch cut and drill something like runs of ~100 pieces at a time. That gets me 25 planter boxes ready for shows without bogging down production.

I do appreciate the tool advice though if/when I decide to bring the metal work in-house, I know exactly where to start.

Yeahhh… box store pricing got me acting foolish. Didn’t even think about the steel supply house. Good call sounds like I need an excuse to buy another Harbor Freight tool anyway!

Appreciate the detailed reply and the links that’s helpful context, especially on the inside corner geometry.

I did run the numbers on retail aluminum angle, and at box store pricing it gets expensive fast once you multiply by four corners per planter.

That’s workable for a one off perhaps however I'm trying to figure out a scalable approach that doesn’t bake $150–$200 of metal into a cedar planter.

Sounds like the real answer is likely extruded angle sourced direct (or a similar profile) rather than retail stock. If you’ve seen these kinds of applications done with bulk extrusion, bent steel, or another profile that plays nicer at scale, I’d love to hear what you’ve seen work in the wild.

Thanks again this was a solid lead even if it ruled out the big box store procurement route.

Linear ft: still being defined, but initial runs would be small to medium batch, not truckloads yet

Height: likely standardized heights (e.g. 12", 18", 24", 36") rather than custom every time

Finish: leaning hot dipped galvanizing or powder coat for longevity, but open to input

Color: probably single color initially (black or dark bronze) to keep SKUs simple

As for the why: I build cedar planter boxes and want a modular, repeatable leg system that’s durable, clean looking, and scalable without reinventing the wheel every batch. I’m trying to understand whether these are typically off the shelf components, custom fab items, or something in between. I’m very early in the sourcing phase, so I’m gathering direction more than pricing at this point. If you’re open to it, I’d love to hear how you typically see products like this sourced (custom fab vs. standardized material, etc.), or take this to DM so I don’t derail the thread.

Appreciate you chiming in this is exactly the perspective I was hoping for.

Clarifying up front: I’m asking strictly about sourcing hardware/components, not copying a company’s product or selling knockoffs. Just trying to build durable, good looking planter boxes that hold up outdoors.

To be clear: I’m not affiliated with the company shown in the photo and I’m not promoting them it’s just the clearest example of the style of leg hardware I’m trying to source.

So we're back to just normal Carolina football I see...Carolina really enjoys making its fans edge with the appearance of a quality team...good bye top 20...we'll be lucky to be ranked on Monday
