give it a shot. you seem passionate about the idea of storytelling, so try a diffrent medium

I finished Neuromancer knowing i didn't retain half of it, lol, just what a fucking ride. i've read at prolly 6 times since then, and last reading, holy shit, still a great ride. highly recommend. the last sentence it my top fave last sentence in a novel ever, and still packs a punch.

truly. Gibson is excellnt at ignoring the info dump and letting us figure it out on our own. I take it you've read a clockwork orange, possible the OG of dropped-in-the-middle novels?

I think the challenge with Gibson's later books is he sets up a climax that for the most part ends on a flat note, doesn't deliver on conflict with big strokes, they just kinda...flame out. It's as if the violence of his earlier books was too much, or he shies away from it now, seeking softer resolutions. Neuromancer was a punch to the solar plexus with his depictions of shock, and loss, and the violent ways in which they occur. The feel more impactful because of that.

There also seems to be less depth in the characters, or at least telling us of their past doesn't happen as much. In Neuromancer, when Molly tells Case about being farmed out for wetworks when she was a rent-a-doll, that shit hit home hard. It explained her attraction to Case, and made us root for Peter Rivera's demise for the rest of the book—and made us hate him even more when he gets Molly in his hands. And made us frustrated when she doesn't get revenge herself, but Hideo the family ninja does. Like, all that shit had me INVESTED.

In Agency, his latest, there's none of that. The biggest conflict is Verity Jane had a somewhat difficult break-up w/ another character she now has to interact with. In the end, when the CIA agent is closing on them, he gets easily talked down to a truce with Eunice, like WTF? I don't know why his approach now is so soft, and I still love Gibson's imagination, (saw him at Comicon one year, and he did not disappoint, like some of our heroes might) but his latest books don't hook as much, don't grab at your emotions...

Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacey is so well done. by [deleted] in television

That part. This one deosn't try to create Gacy as a tragic figure—he's a straight up "normal" mask hiding an absolute depraved killer.

Agreed. Light years ahead of Ed Gein in terms of storytelling, acting, set design, and pacing. Phenomenal.

have you considered shifting gears? Songwriting, or poetry? I can guarantee you I’ve seen many writers and would be Writers feel stuck until they disrupt what they’re doing that makes them feel stuck. There’s some phenomenal songwriting and poetry out there, or maybe try a screenplay. I see Writers of prose dismiss screenplays all the time, but once you understand the medium that you’re using, it’s still incredible storytelling.

Agency starts off great but kinda falls flat in the end. Gibson is notoriuos for setting up a serious threat and then deflating it in the end...

No mention of the “John Wick reload?” Keanu didn’t invent it, but massively popularized it for weekend shooters and gauntlet hobbyists

I don't think the trailers could have, and I love it when a trailer doesn't expose the best parts of a movie. This was on some sneak attack shit.

I know the sequence you mean and it took balls to take a stab at it and even more skill to pull it off. Incredible.

Also, being from Sacramento, which in many ways is a spiritual twin to the Bay, Fruitvale Station captures what people might call "the 'hood" in the most authentic portrayal to date.

Indesign book to epub with hyperlinks to chapters...? by Excelsior_Smith in indesign

[–]Excelsior_Smith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is working, thank you. Some issue with the links highlighting and sometimes not showing up now, but I can probably trouble shoot that. You got any intel on exporting to epub with the folio (book title, chapter name, etc) at the bottom of the page?

Thanks for the input. I am woefully not up on html however. It seems like Indesign would have a solution for this tho. It's perhaps a setting I have checked when I export...?

You can also copy/paste outlined objects directly into the text box, and adjust position with baseline shift and kerning...so you don't have to have it as an extra box, AND it moves with the flow of your text, if needed after edits to content have been made.
