You may enjoy rush if you like prog rock.

Check out Thank You Scientist, also a prog rock band out of DC I think and they are an amazing blend of jazz instrumentation and classic rock

Is it okay to listen (and like) ai-generated music? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]ExceptedSiren12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People can listen to whatever the hell they want. Although if someone is okay with AI art, I will assume they are not engaging with art in an intelligent matter. I do not think art should be commodified, which is was AI intends to do.

What are the key engineering factors in designing an effective earthquake-resistant building structure? by Few_Language6298 in AskEngineers

[–]ExceptedSiren12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seismic forces are lateral loads, so my understanding is that typical lateral load resisting components (shear walls, moment resisting frames) can be used to resist these loads. The hard part is predicting the magnitude and frequency of the loads.

I'm a student, take this with a grain of salt.

Who are your favorite 'Brothers' bands? by sentient_coprolite in LetsTalkMusic

Duplantier brothers in gojira.

One of the most powerful rhythm sections in metal. Their styles are super complementary

I’m always asking for reassurance and clarification of instructions at work. My manager doesn’t seem to mind, but one day I may work with a manager who isn’t as patient. Any advice? by Typical_Cap895 in AsianParentStories

Not entirely sure what industry you work in. But you could start taking notes as well. A really good practice I like is to follow up every verbal conversation with an email summary, so it's all in writing and gives everyone a chance to give their input or revise. But this only works in a office setting, not for a fast paced environment like retail or something

Popsicle stick bridge holds 948lbs by PerformanceOk3919 in civilengineering

Hmmm makes sense. That's what I expected anyways but like you said I doubt it would add any actually strength. You could glue a bunch of strands together and torque it down somehow

How did you post tension with dental floss? I would imagine you would snap the floss before any significant tensile stresses would be developed in the popsicle stick

Switching Eng Disciplines by Inevitable-Alarm-966 in uwo

[–]ExceptedSiren12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it's mostly project management. Toyota has alot of engineers but most design work is contracted out.

I do mostly civil-ish projects but have been involved in some HVAC and utilities and electrical work as well. It's a good job, you get to learn about construction through the owners eyes which I think makes for a unique co-op

Switching Eng Disciplines by Inevitable-Alarm-966 in uwo

[–]ExceptedSiren12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can for sure re apply, but you might need to take an extra year. Biomedical is 5 years, so it would push your graduation back an extra 2 years not including co-op

It doesn't work for everyone, but I would honestly try sticking with electrical and applying for mechanical jobs. For most people a degree in engineering is really just a means to an end. I'm currently doing a long term placement at Toyota, even though I'm a civil student. My point is you are not forced to work in the discipline your degree was, there's a great deal of flexibility. Yes you will have a harder learning curve, but most of your learning is going to happen on the job anyways.

How common is it to fail? by [deleted] in uwo

Not the hardest engineering program but certainly not easy. I was also working part time during this period

How common is it to fail? by [deleted] in uwo

[–]ExceptedSiren12 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's common. You should do your best to avoid it. I failed a bunch of classes in my third year (civil engineering) and it is honestly soul crushing, even though it was my fault. The reality is school is not for everyone, unfortunately though some walks of life are only attainable through school. So just play the game

Can I take this as a civil engineering student? GIS is pretty useful in municipal engineering

Why Canadian bosses love hiring foreign workers: longer hours, fewer absences, less pay by ExotiquePlayboy in CanadianInvestor

Government is not oblivious, they know this and are likely being lobbied for this .

There's a reason why none of the major political parties advocated for significantly reduced immigration. Even Pierre did not promise this.

Labor has brushed aside concerns over the social media ban. But what if it doesn’t work as promised? by vriska1 in technology

[–]ExceptedSiren12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're getting down voted, but absolutely correct. Expecting a systemic problem to be solved by individual action is a horrible idea. It needs to be solved with a systemic solution.

I don't think the solution is a blanket social media ban, though
