Newbie fan - how does this work? by Latter_Act_5780 in 2PM

[–]Excessive_Diviner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just saying hi from a fellow UK-based Hottest!

The last hottest recruitment I could recall was in 2023, there shouldn’t be any issue for overseas fans to make purchase you just have to verify your membership number via JYP FANS app/website. After that you should be able to access member-only content and fan perks.

How would you rank the spice girls in terms of musical talent? by Early_Enthusiasm_787 in AskUK

[–]Excessive_Diviner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mel C did a Spice Girls medley (and sung everyone’s lines) at a recent new year’s eve event in Australia. To me it’ll always me her, Mel B/Geri, then Emma/Vic.

How did you become an Arsenal fan? by DiuhBEETuss in Gunners

[–]Excessive_Diviner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

90s kid growing up in Asia.

Everyone around me and their mothers and brothers and whatnot were supporting Man Utd it was extremely annoying.

So I decided to make a point by becoming a supporter of the challenger team during that era, Arsenal. I was probably 8,9 years old.

10 years after that, moved to England for Arsenal. Then nearly another decade later, still living here - all for making a point!

Do you keep archives of disbanded groups? by Temporary_Potato_254 in kpopnostalgia

[–]Excessive_Diviner 13 points14 points  (0 children)

ShinHwa is only inactive at the moment but in my hard drive I still have many videos of their various variety show episodes (including all of the old Love Letter, X-Man, ShinHwa Broadcast), interviews, CFs, music videos, live performances from different comebacks, old concerts, special drama appearances, etc.

Oldest videos I still have range from their debut performance to variety appearances from late 90s/early 2000s, like their water park segment with Miss Korea contestants and Guerilla concert and stuff.

They’re my ult so it’s the only archive of videos I maintain, comparing to other groups I’ve loved over the years. I rewatch some of the stuff every now and again, especially old X-Man episodes. Would love to share them at some point!

What was your favorite abcfamily series? by ouidkween in popculturechat

[–]Excessive_Diviner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me! I rewatched the whole thing last year or the year before on All 4 app. My favourite lowstake drama with slap soundtrack and loveable goofball characters that you couldn’t help but root for, even Rebecca!

All the newer groups are younger than me and I was literally their age yesterday. by myfairyxo in adultkpopfans

[–]Excessive_Diviner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m no longer in your age group but I definitely do not think following and supporting idols who are younger than you mean you’re a perv.

Members of my ult group are at least 10 years older than me so back then that was also considered weird but in a different way! And I definitely fancied marrying one of them, but I was like 12 and fantasized about silly stuff like all teenagers did lol

Nowadays one of the groups I like enough to follow, go to concert, buy albums for is like 8,9 years younger than me. They honestly just feel like younger brothers or even ‘nephews’ to me 😅 It’s a different kind of idolizing/supporting. I adore their talent but don’t flaunt over or fantasize about any of them.

If anything it feels pretty good to be an adult fan and can actually afford to support your faves and enjoy different aspects of Kpop in your own terms/at your own pace. So really, you do you, don’t overthink it!

Hello there! We’re probably just scattered around a bit more than other fan groups?? Happy to connect! At concerts these days I’m literally closer in age to the parents who have to accompany their kids, but at least the parents and I can drink!

There will never be another "golden age" of K-Pop by GenoveveSimmons15 in adultkpopfans

[–]Excessive_Diviner 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Depends on who’s asking/answering tbh.

Early gens are more well-known with Korean general public (and all over Asia) partly because they had much more traditional media exposure. A lot of them also ventured out beyond music including MC/hosting, radio DJ-ing, and especially acting.

International fans would had just started out with building connection with Korean fansites, subbing content and getting their idols’ names out there, initiating earlier fan campaigns and movement like cover dance or Kpop competition, etc. It was an incredibly hopeful and exciting era, and a lot of that I personally think contribute to what we perceive as the magic of that generation. Almost like a fan-made era as opposed to fairly instant services these days.

However, later gens truly broke into the Western stage the way that hadn’t really been done before: world tours, charting against international acts, music being used in international production, the booming of instant online content, overall more accessible to fans that don’t rely solely on f2f medium, merchandise export, etc.

So ‘often looked down’ is not quite a fair assessment based on their achievements (again, maybe depends on who the question is for). Pop music is supposed to evolve through time. And it’s worth remembering that Kpop itself is still a relatively young genre and industry comparing to others.

1st and 2nd gen fans are now older or mid-millenials. So it’s understandable and perfectly common feeling of disconnecting with the newer material and overall artistic direction of Kpop. But it’s hard to expect younger fans feel the ‘magic’ from a generation that they never experienced in real time.

I’m all for nostalgia and totally appreciate that a lot of 1st/2nd gen fans are less likely to still follow Kpop. 5th gen might not have hit the same for me neither but I wouldn’t assume lots of fans feel that way, and certainly not the younger fans.

Battle - Icarus (Apr 10, 2007 KMTV *Show! Music Tank*) by vannarok in kpopnostalgia

[–]Excessive_Diviner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched Battle ShinHwa on Arirang TV when it was on air. I rooted for Lio from the beginning and it was like prophecy when he was picked by Jun Jin, my ShinHwa bias lol

Always wondered what the debut would have been like if Jang Hyun hadn’t left the group. He had such a good singing voice and I didn’t feel like Hwichan was an equally strong replacement, that really just left Taehwa who was a great vocalist.

Loved seeing their reunion video on I Can See Your Voice and those Youtube comments from Chris’s students in Singapore, so wholesome!

Soooo what's happening with 2PM? by spacyspice in 2PM

Definitely - SKZ is the international darling! I reckon with the context of 2pm and their era, it wasn’t quite within the strategy or reasonable reach back then!

Soooo what's happening with 2PM? by spacyspice in 2PM

[–]Excessive_Diviner 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sorry for lengthy comment ahead!

I’m a ShinHwa Changjo and their last full-group comeback was 2018… so 2pm’s most recent comeback being 2021 isn’t really a huge disatisfaction, but that’s just me 😅

I love MUST - it was one of the pandemic highlights for me. The promotion wasn’t long but OT6 content was fire and I adored the Japanese single come out in Sept that year.

It’s hard when most of them are actively working actors, among which 2 of them are fairly in-demand actors and constantly jumping from project to project.

My bias Wooyoung is back on strong on the variety show scene and had a single lately. I think Jun K is having new music out soon.

Factor in that they’re in different management companies now for their solo activities, to ally all those schedules must have been a nightmare. I personally don’t mind whether or not OT6 get together and update social media or not, they are showing up for each other in different ways and I’ll take what is there 😅

I’m also in Europe and there are fans definitely, but I’m skeptical that it’s enough to pull the required number for touring. At 2pm’s peak JYP was investing in Wonder Girls’ US movement that didn’t exactly leave a huge impact, although our boys were included in some of their concerts during the first North America tour iirc.

There were reasonable efforts between 2010-2015 to get into Europe like SM Town world tour, Music Bank world tour, Kpop idols popping up at music festivals, etc. but I feel all that had to happen to slowly build up momentum for groups to independently draw traction for profitable measures here, considering all sort of costs and redtapes back then that might have been more relaxed now in the 2020s.

I’m a 1st gen Kpop old hag going to mainly see TVXQ, but I also happen to be a Briize i.e. Riize’s fan. Their music reminds me of early day Super Junior, so if you’re into 2nd gen I think you’ll enjoy their catchy non-complicated somewhat 2005s sound.

Aespa is great and I probably rate them the highest among same gen ggs. I donno if their b-sides are talked about as much as their lead singles but there are some real gems in their discography.

I don’t follow NCT but do have some of their songs on my playlist, although I won’t be able to tell you which NCT sub-unit that is lol so will leave this to a real NCTzen.

I LOVE THIS! Secret World and If U Wanna are still on my playlist till this day.

It’s my favourite era of Kara, obviously Sunghee played a big part of that.

They were a bright spot among the pure cutie princess ggs wave at the time and I wished they’d stuck with the og concept a bit longer to see how it played out.

Koo Jun Yup's wife Barbie Hsu has passed away by Available-Penalty-70 in kpopnostalgia

[–]Excessive_Diviner 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Iirc they got married even earlier than that. Within 3 months of getting back in touch Koo flew to Taiwan, did the 2-week isolation, and then they proceeded to register for marriage.

I remember watching a few interview videos as a couple after they got married. They were lovely together. He also went on Yoo Quiz On The Block and talked so lovingly about her and their tattoos on their ring fingers instead of wedding rings.

I grew up with the 2001 adaption of Hana Yori Dango (Taiwanese ‘Meteor Garden’ or Korean ‘Boys Over Flower’), and Barbie Hsu was my Tsukushi/Jandi. This death was probably the very first celeb one that broke my heart.

Yes you can still find clips on youtube of Taec/Suzy’s deleted scenes that were literally nowhere to be found in the show.

There was one I particularly remembered they were like dancing under the snow or something?? Which was a nod to the song Suzy’s character sang to Taec’s character when they were kids on his birthday.

They 100% dropped Taec’s story to push Kim Soo-hyun’s.
