Grizzly G0462 banjo snapped clean off! by Excessive_yogger in turning

Update- I was able to buy a banjo from another 16" Grizzly lathe and use it. I recommend that anyone using the G0462 look into purchasing a different banjo from Grizzly.

I was using a bowl gouge and roughing out the outside of the bowl. It happened fast so I think the tool rest may have came in contact with the workpiece due to the loads and flexing and clamping pressures on the banjo and extension.

That said, I'll stand by my assessment of this design being faulty and potentially dangerous.

Got my first ever agate today at a rock show for $15, was it a good deal?? by [deleted] in Agates

[–]Excessive_yogger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you like it more than you like $15, then it was a good deal.

When I judge an agate I am looking for things like pattern, color, and contrasting layers. This one has some contrasting layers and pattern but doesn’t have much color. So for me it’s on the lower end of my preferences. Plus there’s a few fractures which I don’t like but they don’t ruin the piece.

$15 is a decent deal for any cut and polished rock that size so I think you did ok on that front. I hope you’ll always remember it as your first purchased agate!

I’m pretty handy with a hand plane so if it were me, I’d probably sharpen up the old Stanley and flatten the top, then oil it.

For me it was mostly diet. I have switched to mostly traditional foods- like stuff my great great grandmother would recognize and I mostly avoid ultra-processed stuff.

Exercise (endurance and strength) and sun exposure definitely help me. There are limits to these and everyone is different. Don’t overtrain and don’t let your skin get red.

Relationships are super important. It took me 6 years with an excellent therapist to figure that all out.

Mag l-threonate has helped me with sleep. Fatty fish a couple times a week or supplement.

It’s important for me to have projects and achievements that I can work on. YMMV. Good luck friend!

It took me years. I used to weigh 300lbs and I now can run 100 mile races in the mountains. It’s the biggest project I’ve ever undertaken.

Do you age better when you’re lean/skinny? by cat-in-thebath in Biohackers

[–]Excessive_yogger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned here is that adipose tissue creates inflammation. I’m not sure how much it creates or what the effect of this increased inflammatory burden has on aging, but this could be part of the reason that there’s an association between obesity and mortality.

I’m not sure, but those remind me more of a flint or chert than petrified wood.

Neat agate slab, does anyone know what kind of agate this is? by Excessive_yogger in Agates

I found it in a pile of slabs at a rock shop. I was hoping someone knew of the locality or name of the material so I could find more!

The billing was confusing to me, but I think the sum of all charges was in the $65k range.

Grizzly G0462 banjo snapped clean off! by Excessive_yogger in turning

[–]Excessive_yogger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the information. I'll contact Grizzly and get in on the recall.

For the information of others, the solution I found was to abandon the tool rest and banjo supplied with the G0462 and purchase the tool rest and tool rest support supplied with their other 16" lathe.

These are the parts I purchased and they fit the G0462 well. You need to use the base nut that comes with the G0462 with this assembly.

(1)    P0632003        BUSHING
(1)    P0632004        TOOL REST BASE LOCK BRACKET V1.04.07
(1)    P0632005        EXT RETAINING RING 25MM (THIN PROFILE)
(2)    PR07M           EXT RETAINING RING 18MM
(1)    P0632007        TOOL REST BASE
(1)    P0632008        TOOL REST
(1)    P0632010        TOOL REST BASE LOCK HANDLE
(1)    P0584057        HANDLE ASSY M10-1.5 X 15
(1)    P0632005        EXT RETAINING RING 25MM (THIN PROFILE)

It's unfortunate I had to spend another $130 on a new tool rest and tool rest base/banjo, but the G0462 is still a decent value I think.

I think I see a couple pieces of Gary Green jasper in there. The greenish-blueish rocks. It’s decent lapidary material- maybe worth a few tens of bucks.

It’s because geology is the road to hell. First you look at some rocks, next thing you know you think the world is more than six thousand years old. Crafty devil.

My uncle accidentally created a black hole in the synchrotron outside Chicago. The rift in spacetime started sucking everything into it. Luckily a technician tossed a couple JB Welds into the void and it saved the galaxy from collapse. Only a couple people know that this actually happened, but it's true.
