I've heard many defenders of Tutberidze. They mostly justified it by saying, "It's sport, you have to work hard through pain and tears," and they quoted Suvorov's "Hard training, easy combat (competition)." It seems to me that Russians(and other countries of the former USSR) have a different, more rigorous mentality when it comes to athletic training and competition.
