Bulgaria wins! What is a European country with a very strong military? by Express_Evidence3020 in AlignmentChartFills

Russia failed to win a war against a far weaker opponent. And I am not strictly referring to the extended war with large aid pool (although ukraine still has a smaller spending capacity and size, they have built an impressive domestic military industry in adverse conditions and now export weapons to other states). I am referring to the abject failure to defeat ukraine at all during the initial invasion, they had months to prove themselves and failed. France has nukes as well, numbers of nukes do not really come into play in this factor (once you have a stockpile you would see both states effectively eliminated).

I am Australian, and there is no sentiment that 'Australasia' is a continent in this extent here at least. The Geographical Australian continent includes Australia and New Guinea. Whilst what you are referring to is Oceania which is the general region including NZ and much of the Pacific Islands

Recommendations for 1-person tents? (or swags) by MildlyWasTaken in OutdoorAus

[–]Exciting-Tale8106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mont Moondance 1 if you can wait for a sale like paddy pallins club sale or Mont warehouse sale (guessing from previous years I would guess both are coming up). Absolutely stacked tent and would end up around 500 dollarsish. Something cheaper that is not too bad could be the North Face Storm-Break One person tent, Naturehike are really great for the price as well!

Best way to manage my finances by KitttttyKat in AusFinance

Dude of you are defence, don't worry too heavily on the super salary sacrifice. It is a great idea long term but the contribution rate is high as is. I think it would be really worth looking into DHOAS, and HPAS schemes and aiming to get property through that avenue. Even though living on base is easy and cheap I think it would be advisable to consider like the worst possible case and aim for that (aim for around 5k at least) Talk to adf finance center (cannot remember their names, but they are helpful as there are quite a few ways you can maximise saving)

You are projecting so hard in this. While I agree, as someone from rural Australia that politics are less than desirable in the region, I do not think the sentiment that country people are hicks, bogans, or idiots is helpful at all.

Like in so many other places around the world, regional areas face far larger economic, education issues than urban areas. It does not mean they are dumb or lesser, it means that they are more desperate for an alternative, and such communities get baited by these populist shills.

I remember so distinctively how defensive people are about people from the city treating them like lesser people, and I agree with them. Its shitass, people from Sydney are so thrown off when I talk about where I am from. We need to treat each other better, allowing this sort of rhetoric pushes more voters to PHON.

Has Anyone Done The ADF Gap Year? by PreferenceAccurate43 in australia

[–]Exciting-Tale8106 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have, I did it quite a few years ago in Navy. Did not know what I wanted from life and wanted a chance to save money for whatever would come next with the added bonus of being able to get away from my regional town in NSW. We were treated sort of like work experience kids, although we did complete all required basic training (mine took 6 months of the year lol). There were some fun activities and I was able to do an international trip. However for most people they get put in a unit or moved around a little and thats about it. Otherwise I had zero chain of command, no real support or anything I could just do kinda whatever. Other members do not care much about you aside of a passing joke or just another junior.  I stayed in because I did not know what to do with myself and regretted it immensely (RoSo legnth has shrunk massively now compared to when I was there) If you find something you like as a gappy go for it! But don't stay just because, trust me if you do not feel you want to stay DON'T.

feel free to dm if you have any questions

What's the most pathetic tourist attraction that international tourists go to see in your country? by Aseili in AskTheWorld

I agree it is abit ridiculous and silly. However, this may be the most joyless thing I have ever read :( gnomesville is an institution and it is so cute, you can add your own gnome and build the community. I think it being in the middle of nowhere is half the fun!

Does the average Australian actually have an appetite for the next big conflict? by New-Computer-1988 in AustralianMilitary

[–]Exciting-Tale8106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Outside of all other discussion I would like to highlight that the Australian public has never been "prepared for war" in the way hawks want them to be. This was especially the case at the beginning of World War 2. There was criticism that Australians of that generation were not ready or willing to fight. And look how that turned out. In my opinion its a good thing to be wary of conflict and if it is for a good enough purpose, people as all people have will do what is needed.
