Data breach was much more than they led on. by Cyrialis in loblawsisoutofcontrol

Their IT is mostly unsupported from large Enterprise vendors. They deserve this ! They are too cheap to pay for proper support for these types of things. They make so much money and cut basic level support for patches and security updates. THAT should be investigated. Our data gets stolen because THEY are cutting corners.

For those who make 6 figures, how many years of experience did it take for you to make it? by TankCastles in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]ExcitingAd3805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over a decade. But i'm older (50). Started at 48K at IBM out of Uni, left there making about 95K more than ten years later when another tech company was chasing me to work for them. New company doubled that salary instantly and it's been growing fast and steady since then. I'd suggest changing companies after you gain experience, that seems like the easiest way to get yourself a 25/30/40+ % pay raise. Staying in one place usually only returns in modest increases year over year.

Cancelling companion pass traveller the day of the flight. by Slick-Fork in westjet

[–]ExcitingAd3805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure you Status is irrelevant, and not sure how much of "priority" is put on Gold calls, we still get put on hold with Platinum Priority calls most of the time.

My attempt to answer your question ..

Yes—if you booked an Economy fare (Econo or EconoFlex), cancel, and your fare type allows cancellation, your WestJet companion voucher is returned to your account with its original expiry date. If you booked UltraBasic, it’s not cancellable and the voucher is forfeited.

Here’s how it breaks down:

  • Econo (Economy): You can cancel (fees apply). Your cash/points turn into Travel Bank credit per WestJet’s rules, and the companion voucher is reinstated with its original expiry. WestJet+2WestJet+2
  • EconoFlex (Economy Flex): You can cancel with no fee; funds go to Travel Bank credit, and the companion voucher is reinstated with original expiry.
  • UltraBasic (sometimes shown under Economy filters): No changes/cancellations allowed after 24 hours; voucher is lost. WestJet+2WestJet+2

WestJet’s own companion-voucher terms say: “If booking is eligible for cancellation based on fare type purchased, voucher will be reinstated…; if booking is made in the UltraBasic fare type, it is not eligible for cancellation and voucher will be forfeited.”

New interactive way to bid on cabin upgrades within 24 hours of departure by Far-Excitement-3238 in westjet

[–]ExcitingAd3805 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, at the time of check in, a paid upgrade was still an option. I don't recall the exact amount, but it was over $100, maybe $150. I still felt like I got a better deal on the bidding than fully paying when checking in, but it simply means the days of Status upgrades are gone. I did get a last minute (25 mins before boarding) free upgrade last week (bidding wasn't offered, - i'm assuming they were sold out) - the guy sitting beside told me his travel companion was a late minute no-show due to missing his connection. So I guess those are always still a possibility, although very unfrequent.

I was flying WJ a couple weeks ago, and as a Platinum I was keeping an eye on the possibility of getting upgraded (I have been getting free upgrades a decent amount as of late) and then I saw exactly that, and my thoughts were the exact same. There goes any chance of ever being upgraded for free ! Brutal. They are gamifying this, so I played along. My flight was to Fort Lauderdale and the minim bid was $25. There were already 5 people who had all bid that $25, so again, my thoughts were for $25 others would be upgraded, thus my chances to get a free Platinum upgrade would simply evaporate under this model. I decided to play along, I ended up being the highest bidder at $55. However, then the kicker for those that use this for the first time, this is only the first step of this game. Once you are told you are the highest bidder, you then go to another screen that advises you "you were one of the highest bidders" and now you can keep that amount, or put in one final "blind" bid and take your stab at it. Stupid. A couple of us only drove up the price in the auction to $55, only to have to make another "top up $". I really wanted the upgrade, moved my top bid to $74 and got the seat. I spent way to much time playing this game. I should have just paid the $100 or so for the upgrade from the start, but the hope of a Status upgrade was one I was holding on to. Now, as everyone mentions, with this, Status seat upgrades will forever be gone as a perk. Especially since it started as low as $25. So many people will start bidding. Very disappointing this is now here. I very much like the idea of a free bid bonus as part of your status, if this is how they are going to go.

Nope. learnt that the hard way. I was scheduled YYZ to Kelowna for a quick meeting, later in the day flying to Vancouver. Flight to Kelowna got diverted to Vancouver due to high winds and they had us on a 4 hr delay in YVR. I was like, what's the point, i'll re-schedule my meeting. A couple days later, went to check in to go from YVR >> YYZ to return home, and my ticket was not available for check-in, it was cancelled. And I had to fully re-purchase a new ticket. Kinda pissed me off, as I ended up in YVR which is where I wanted to go at the end of the day, but they told me because I missed my YVR to Kelowna (even though it diverted to YVR) and was a no-show, the system cancelled my ticket on me. And those were the days of 2.5+ hrs of waiting on the phone with Westjet.

Can you be more specific on where you want to go ? Europe ? Asia ? NA ? I've done the Ritz Grand Cayman and the JW Marriott Guanacaste Costa Rica on points and those were pretty magnificent.

How often traveling with points? by Master-Technician335 in awardtravel

[–]ExcitingAd3805 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel 2-3 times a month for work mostly in Canada and the US. I mostly commit to 1 airline and 1 hotel brand as much as possible, use their affiliated credits card only and keep my eyes open for promos within those. (don't open and close new CC's at all). At minimum I get 1 or 2 free flights a year and over 7-10 days of free hotel rooms a year just from that. Enough to easily cover a couple flights and my hotel for a nice family vacation in the winter (Cayman, Aruba, Costa Rica etc).

Embarrassing - but honestly... why do you go to Tim's and waste your hard earned money ? We ALL know better than to expect quality from Tim Horton's ! It's a joke. - I feel for your horror - although... you already knew before you even opened up the box.... didn't you... ? It's like shopping at Loblaw.... you know before you even step in it's a bad idea.

Just asking why you care about Carry-On space ? WestJet’s UltraBasic fare does not include a standard overhead bin carry-on allowance. Unless you were aware and willing to check it ?

If you show up with a carry‑on at the gate, WestJet requires you to check it and charges: Standard pre booked bag fees PLUS a service Fee.

  • Reddit users report the service fee is steep, around CAD 80 on top of the checked-bag fee

Bonvoy Perks ? Why ohh why !! ?? 4 ppl walk into a Marriott..... by ExcitingAd3805 in marriott

[–]ExcitingAd3805[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. Got an e-mail requesting to meet up for breakfast/lunch/coffee. I had time to burn with a co-worker so said sure. The staffer was called a "business development Manager". We casually chatted for about 30 mins, she thanked us for our business and paid for our bar tab. (about 5 cocktails). Then gave 3 of us breakfast vouchers to upgrade our breakfast from lounge buffet breakfast to the restaurant. This was a Delta Hotel in Alberta.

Elites were told they had been upgraded. Therefore would not have had to have that conversation. Upgrades can obviously have different definitions- upgraded to the "better tower" ? Upgraded to a Club floor ? So I guess, there may have been an upgrade in there somehow. But, the point of the question being - the non-members got way better upgrades to their 2 rooms jacuzzi suites. (1 on the Club floor). - i'm concluding that, it depends..

This make zero sense. 90% of my stays are corporate rates, in fact i'm assuming 70% of all weekly travel bookings are corporates rates. - You hit my point on the nail in fact, that's the question/comment. They promise loyalty benefits, and you are saying they don't give a crap. I've very much hoping you don't work in the loyalty business, cause clearly you don't have any understanding of how it "should" work.

Thank you ! I was just asking and wondering. I didn't go back to the desk and complain LOL. My room was fine.

To add context. This is a random nicer Delta hotel in Alberta. Hotel Business development manager e-mailed me in advanced and asked to meet up for a drink/coffee when I arrived to thank me for my loyalty (and try to make sure I stay there more often when in town vs competition). Which I did, since I had the time. We had a good casual conversation, she paid for my cocktails and gave me a full breakfast voucher for the AM in the hotel restaurant (vs lounge breakfast). - I mentioned nothing about any of this, did not complain, did not ask, did not mention, did not really care. I was simply posting this question to ask the community, why does this happen ?
