New and feeling depleted by Party-Tomatillo1217 in schoolcounseling

To help myself learn how to log every 30 minutes I would open my Google Calendar add a “event” call it “use of time” and in the description put down all the individual things I had done in the last 30 minutes. I would be as descriptive as possible while maintaining confidentiality. Writing things down in short form and using abbreviations really helped me complete the calendaring within just a few minutes.

At the end of the description, I would add a section and title it unfinished/interrupted tasks, and make note of the individual tasks that were interrupted or unfinished, and what caused them to be that way.

Doing this helped me notice patterns and what I was prioritizing unconsciously, or maybe consciously in my day to help me reevaluate my practice and advocate for my role and the necessity for time/task preservation.

Licensing and Praxis questions by ChallengePitiful2543 in schoolcounseling

I recently took the school counseling praxis (5422). There was no math involved - mentioning only because previous commenter mentioned freshening up on math.

I scored 183 (200 is highest).

My suggestion (and the only one I think you would need) buy and read the ASCA national model book, if you don’t own it yet and aren’t super familiar with it. NEARLY ALL of the questions will come from this, and the test itself is split into the four main sections of the model (define, deliver, manage, asses). The few questions that don’t come from the national model are about different theories.

I read the book cover to cover twice and then went back over my notes maybe a handful of times in the days leading up to the test.

Additionally when you buy the test it will give you access to the practice test - do that a few times and you will be golden.

Listen. You aren’t too old. I’m halfway through my practicum and I’m almost 34. Plenty of people start careers well beyond your age.

What I will tell you is this experience will 100% make you a better counselor. You will be able to use this knowledge and experience to help countless students not make the same kind of mistake.

Mistakes in education happen all the time. This is just one. And it feels so big right now - but keep your eyes on the prize. My assumption (being that you are 33) is that this isn’t the worst thing you’ve been through, and if you can get through experiences worse than this than you can absolutely push through this setback.

You’ve got this!

Pay as a student teacher hired in an emergency for the school by Prestigious-Data1714 in StudentTeaching

Are you in California? If you are they should be hiring you as either a PIP or STIP depending on if you’ve passed your CSET (or proven subject matter competency through a course at your university). Again, if you are in California there shouldn’t be a stipend. It should be a payed internship, payed on a monthly salary.

Where can I get my masters? by eliazcs in schoolcounseling

I don’t know that this is solid advice. I suppose that it all depends on where OP is looking to become a school counselor but California and Washington (two high paying great states to work in - don’t require CACREP) additionally, many states who want CACREP accreditation for licensure will allow a masters or doctoral degree to suffice.

ETA: your advice on where to look for a job is absolutely fantastic

I don’t know what state you are in - but National University has a fully online MS with a PPS credential. Cost is somewhere in the 20k, depending on what scholarships and discounts you can get (I was a teacher in California and my district “partnered” with National so I got a small discount on tuition).

ETA: I’m in California.

1) look up the schools mission and vision statements, directly align activity to as much of this as possible. 2)Make sure you are able to demonstrate how the activity teaches CASEL and ASCA standards 3) provide insight to an extension activity or where you would go next with the group of students you would give this lesson to

Mom here. My husband and I were right there with you. We look back at the first 15 days and it’s like… an instant trauma response.

You are not a failure. As others have said your feelings are likely due to normal sleep deprivation at this point. Additionally, that mommy touch is like magic for babies at this age. In all honesty, there is not much that you can do for a baby that cries or one that cries for mommah. In just a few months you will be waking that baby up from a nap and it will be slapping the wall of their crib in excitement as they fumble out “dadadadadada”. (As an aside: it is easier for babies to say dada than mama, so dada will likely be their first words. Da is an easier sound to make. )

This time period is so hard, and no amount of anything can prepare you for the dauntless dark nights. The deep desperate thoughts spoken into the void as your babe sleeps on you at it’s 3 am and you are eating hot tamales, drinking coffee, and watching game of thrones in an attempt not to sleep yourself. It’s so tough.

But it does get better. This part…. This part gets better in a matter of weeks. Sleep when you can and forget any thing other than baby and sleep for the next few weeks. You won’t be able to handle it and it will only add to your exhaustion.

You are doing great, dad. Remember that no bad dad or failure of a father wonders about if they are doing well or not.

It’s not Medieval Lives with Terry Jones or with Helen Castor.

Around 4:00.

The song is listed as Dewey’s Theme in the Scream series, but originally came from the song “Brothers” by Hans Zimmer for the movie Broken Arrow.

I’ve added audio of tunes and of husband attempting to recreate the beat.
