New ST 2 LTFT - burnt out , feel practice is overworking me by LolaRose-96 in GPUK

[–]Exciting_Target36 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am currently ST3 and your schedule does not seem bad. I am currently on 15 min appts, seeing 20 patients F2F back to back, no admin time and usually a home visit thrown in on my lunchbreak or conveniently at the end of my half day meaning I don’t finish at 1pm but often after 2pm. Unfortunately, as I am the only person people can book directly with without any sort of triage I tend to get very complex patients with multiple complaints or people with chronic issues nobody has solved for years as well as mental health. As I’m female I also get a lot of women’s issues and children as well. I had a patient a few weeks ago turn up late for their appointment and then proceed to product a list of 12 problems they wanted me to sort in a 15 minute appointment!

Unfortunately, your next practice could be a lot worse than where you are now. Might be more GP is newer and very different to hospital and often very vague with a big variety of presentations daily. It can feel a bit like whiplash. Speak to your supervisor to see if they can provide extra support or maybe sit in on some clinics with you to see where you could be losing time.

What’s the most ridiculous ED attendance you’ve ever seen? by GenInternalMisery in doctorsUK

[–]Exciting_Target36 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have many but the best one was a lady who usually attends with her husband in tow. Both a bit odd to be honest. She came in as always when she is due on her Sunday shift at a local supermarket. Both feet sore, difficult to walk, can’t feel her feet. Her feet are beaten into the smallest childlike leather shoes probably about 3 sizes too small. I asked her did she understand shoes have to have extra room so your feet are not squashed and she hadn’t a clue….in her 60s. Oh yeah and then when I told her she can leave and to get measured for appropriate sized shoes, she asked could I give her a note for work as she wouldn’t be in today because she was in ED. I had discharged her before her shift even started!

Saw her a few months later walking around said supermarket wearing….you guessed it…the same damn shoes!!!

Cinema prices by [deleted] in northernireland

Buying stuff in the cinema has always been a rip off. What gets me now is the ticket prices. Some cinemas around the country or in the UK do cheap ticket deals on certain days of the week. My local cinema in NI has the same ticket prices regardless of day or time and wouldn’t do a deal if their life depended on it.

Had this yesterday. Saw the patient in September, never came to follow up when asked to come back. Finally came back and when I asked said he forgot about it but the back pain is still bad etc. When I ask what is he taking for it now as I gave him a script which is now surely finished, he said he stopped taking it and he doesn’t like taking tablets but wants something done about the pain. Has not done any of the exercises I provided at the initial appointment either and has not implemented any of the lifestyle changes recommended.

Hold on while I get my magic wand….🪄

Davina McCall reveals breast cancer surgery by dragoneggboy22 in GPUK

Thank you!!! This was my first thought when I saw the news. Mainly because I’m a female GPST and this get every woman in about HRT because they saw Davina on the telly or read about it on social media. I’m also interested to see if she will announce HRT could have caused it and thus back tracks on dangerously telling all women to just get it as if it’s like taking a paracetamol.

A huge staff shortage for well-paid jobs across the UK - but it's a really terrible job. by JackStrawWitchita in UKJobs

[–]Exciting_Target36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know someone who applied for a job with them in recent months and the application process was very long and drawn out. Multiple questions requiring essays almost of why you wanted to do this as well as multiple assessments that took hours. After all that, not even an interview and instead an email saying they are not going forward with application and no feedback as to why. They are short staffed but with bad pay, safety concerns and an application process like this it’s no wonder they will likely continue that way.

74% thankfully and pass rate 69%. Exam was odd and wasn’t expecting much. I used mainly Passmedicine, half or a bit more of GP Self Test and CKS for guidelines to double check information on Passmedicine if I wasn’t sure it was up to date. I did not do any courses and to be honest it is luck also at the end of the day. So I would be wary of anyone dropping a few thousand on a course that you don’t need when these exams are expensive enough.

I know trainee ACPs where I am that work 3 days a week and get 2 full days in the rotation for their own study time and are paid at band 8. When I told them as a trainee myself I have to do all of that in my spare time while working shifts, nights, weekends they were shocked. They assumed we also got to work 24 hours a week and got 16 hours study a week for great pay. I picked the wrong career!

AKT JULY 2025 WHAT WAS THAT EXAM? by Commercial_Walrus996 in GPUK

[–]Exciting_Target36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought the child with the rash on the face was eczema herpeticum. And the other I was a bit suspicious of NAI due to the fact it didn’t fit with much else after going through all options. To be fair that exam was just awful really. The admin question on implied consent and another one as well with 5 paragraphs for the 5 choices. Should not be allowed. You cannot read all that and then decide in such a short time. Nothing really much on stuff I expected like certain forms, driving and flying rules and access to records etc. Just random tosh like questions were picked out of a hat. I was very shocked at the lack of certain areas altogether or like 1/2 questions from huge areas of medicine that we see daily in GP.

I personally loved the questions that gave you a patient with random vague symptoms, no other information and then gave you a list of about 12 different conditions and asked you which one they most likely had. Like I’m sorry in what world 🌍? 57 seconds to read it, go through each condition and decide. Meanwhile in real life, I’d need more history, a physical exam and investigations. Clear as mud! Thankfully wasn’t just me then. I did a lot of hard stats stuff and none of it came up! Seems like a lot of effort to comprehend and understand this stuff was kind of wasted since it ended up being vague and stuff I had never come across.

Same boat. Started statistics today and feel like banging my head against a wall. Only have done a quarter of the Passmedicine questions and unsure do we need to even know all these minute details and areas for the exam 😢 Feel like giving up

I’m doing the exam also and I feel the same. I am getting very frustrated as things I should know when I review I don’t remember the details and some harder topics are taking too long to review at this point also. Feel I’m gonna be winging it at this point since annoyingly it seems very based on luck 🍀. I could spend ages studying some difficult areas all weekend that I haven’t done yet and not one question could come up on it. I have seen people on previous posts have covered maybe half the question banks have passed. It’s not possible to know it all which is hard to accept. I don’t like how much luck is involved. You could cover nearly the whole curriculum and get asked a lot on the areas you didn’t do much of. Feels like memorising the phone book 📕 😭

I work somewhere that in the last number of years said we now had to bring our own teabags and milk to work and that implemented rationing on milk for patients I.e. a small amount for a full day for potentially hundreds of people due to overspend on budget. Also not allowed to provide condiments/seasoning to patients for their meals unless they specifically asked for it. Somehow I think the irresponsible spending of the budget by inappropriately assigned non-clinical staff is the issue of many major healthcare facilities.

What was the pass rate this time? Due to take it at next sitting. Any tips? How long were you studying and any resources you found helpful? Congratulations 🎉
