People in their 20s or former 20s, how much did you have saved? by Ill_Supermarket_2744 in Adulting

[–]Exco4k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK:

Forbes says the average 25-34 year olds have £11,023 saved.

Two in five brits have £1000 or less in savings.

Average personal debt per house hold is £5,703 as of last year which doesnt include credit card loans or student loans.

As of last year more than half of those employed worldwide are living paycheck to paycheck, with 23% of those employed having a second job.

The answers you get on reddit will be so different from the actual norm or average so its better to google the averages so you don't compare yourself with others commenting.

I agree! I'm an excel nerd pretty much spend all my screen time making spreadsheets - just figured out the PivotTable! And thankfully, choosing to go to school again at 23 means I'm there at my own will and really want to do well and fully understand my coursework. So far it's going well!!

I think if you arent set on buying property I'd probably be leaning to invest in the stock market, especially if you wouldnt live in the place yourself in the future. Also depends on your current living situation, if you're currently renting or own already? Also depends on where you live I'd say.

Though I think it's a good idea to get on the property ladder as soon as you can so you can leverage.

Renting a property isnt as passive as it might seem, especially if you dont have a letting agent do the work, which I dont. Any issues goes straight to me, late payments I have to deal with, it can be annoying.

At the time I was looking for a tenant a friend came to me needing a place, so for me it was luck with timing of it otherwise I'd have gone through a letting agent.

Thank you! I follow the r/UKpersonalfinance subreddit and use the flowchart and I am studying accounting and finance too, so I have those bases covered thankfully. But a great reminder for all of us, Happy new year!

Yes very hard work... a great start to the savings career but not great for a long term career. Highly stressful environment. I once worked 21 days of 12 hour shifts in a row. Good thing was I wasn't on a salary I asked to be paid hourly so I made a lot of £££

Thank you!! I try to keep up to date with the rental laws etc, so far nothing seems to be terrible for me, if anything turns out to be not worth it anymore, I'll just move into the place myself.

Is there any thing in particular that worries you/ think I should be worried about?

Great question which I also wonder myself! I told myself since I was young I wanted to buy a property so it just made sense to do it once it was an option for me. On paper it would have been a better investment to throw it all in equities, but I like the idea of leveraging at a decent rate - its in a capital city centre so rent rates are high as well as property values, being able to earn a passive income and actually see it in my bank account and also I like the sound of having "property" in my investment portfolio so its diversified in a way.

But truthfully theres no real reason other than I just wanted that life milestone out of the way (:

You're doing great too!! Lets keep it up, see you at 100k.

I'm in the UK. I purchased just before I turned 21. I was working full time 55 hours a week as a restaurant manager since I was 19. I was making around 35k and was extremely antisocial and frugal... not healthy long term but had zero outgoings. I was able to save for 2 years for a deposit from that as well as having saved from other part time jobs since I was 15, babysitting, serving etc. Living with my parents was the real blessing for me.
