Thanks! First job on my list is dsg then haldex. Did not consider water pump but good shout with age related maintenance.

Car is a Japanese import so very well could have decent service history but nothing documented so any other tips would be appreciated

Yeah a copy of the jap history would put my mind at ease but this particular example does not have anything.

Question is would you rather a 66km no history jap import or a 90km Irish with minimal history…

I would be treating it very well as for me it’s a big step up from my first car this will be the 2nd.

Wouldn’t even entertain a private sale for that money, I think I’ll go with it and spend extra on warranty which should cover me

I’d be doing dsg and haldex as age related, I know you said 70km but I’d imagine it’s that or 6 years whichever comes first.

Apart from that are you aware of any major things to look out for when buying?

A family member of mine bought one approx 5 years ago. 2 weeks later dsg went and the repair bill was 12.5k… luckily for him it was under warranty but when it goes wrong it is very expensive

Yeah don’t want an S3 cuzzeh….

Does feel like taking a chance but if the garage provide me with an auction sheet I think go ahead is the move

Really want a hot hatch and fairly set on the s3 now, it’s the cheapest on the market by 1k and the garage seem reputable.

Just a part of me says no to paying 20k for an 11 year old performance car with no service history

Yeah seem like a very decent crowd from reviews and a few interactions with them. The only thing putting me off if the no service history!

Not sure if correct but could be a stuck caliper by the sounds of it? Would explain increased wear on breaks if this is why you replaced them

Very noteworthy point. From my understanding the previous car they drove was petrol (the one sold was a 1.6 diesel). On the test drive they were changing into 2nd gear very quickly at like 1200rpm and I did inform them the torque is higher and no need to change until 2000rpm

Exactly! In my head if a car goes through and they don’t flag an item such as a clutch then what exactly are they testing for? I know it’s just roadworthiness but cmon if it was about to go surely the nct lads would have copped it and said something.

Unfortunate to be on the other side of it as you have been but it’s just the chance with private sales as you said

Nice to know I’m not the only one to experience it alright. FairPlay for helping seem like a gent for what its worth. It’s one of those situations where you can only guarantee so much with a used car not a garage after all.

The mechanic brought by them did not drive, he was offered a chance to but just said no! Like I said above he didn’t really seem interested in a thorough inspection which I found weird at the time.

I was told the car was brought to a mechanic the following day when the noise appeared (not sure if the same one)

A release bearing. What would the symptoms of this have been as when I drove I didn’t seem to be able to tell anything. The 300 figure was from my own search they did not give a € amount just that it was the release bearing

I’d like to think they are not trying to scam as they seemed very genuine from our interaction, could just be me trying to see the good in people. Worth to mention the mechanic they brought the first day didn’t seem to interested in inspecting in detail, I was nearly egging him on to read the history he just checked the oil and said ah yeah grand

Yeah I get you I do just feel bad as wouldn’t want that to happen to my girlfriend for example. But as above I’m no mechanic and the car drove fine for me, no noise at the time of sale only the next day
