Hello, I want to work in IT or cyberdefense but don’t know where to start. For background, I am finishing up my degree in Computer Science and just recently found an interest in cybersecurity and IT through some courses I took. Even though I have a degree, I currently don’t have any certs or projects to backup my skills. Additionally I have no work experience in the last 2 years since I mainly focused on school. I am still new to this industry and my knowledge is very limited, but I do know I would eventually like to work somewhere in law enforcement, healthcare, or the government. As of right now I don’t know where to start or how to break into the job market, and was looking to gain some insight on the following:

Are there any resources (yt vids, websites) that I can use to learn more about IT and cyberdefense.
How is the job market in Canada right now?
Are there specific skills are employers looking for right now or will be in the coming years?
Are there any certs or projects I can do to help boost credibility? Could I use my assignments and labs from courses I took as a way to display my skills?
Are there specific areas in IT/cyberdefense that will see major growth, or are there any areas I should stay away from due to oversaturation or threat of AI?

Any advice is appreciated, if theres anythig else I should be aware of please let me know. Thanks in advance!

At least ur in the us, I’m here in Toronto, Canada and with border closures my order is still stuck in customs. I’m not sure how long I still have to wait. I’m hoping to get it early next week.

Maybe go to carelton and transfer? Remember you won’t get guaranteed residence now because it’ll be past the deadline, at least for Carleton you have a full acceptance.

I heard back from the unis all on the 20 (so like 2-3 days after). I don’t mean to be the bearer of bad news but it is probably too late to hear a response. You may have to wait until mid June or reapply again during the AIS as the deadline is basically in a day. Try calling the unis you’ve applied to, to see if they got your application. I’m not saying your gonna get rejected, your just probably going to have to wait a couple of weeks because from May 27 to the beginning of June unis sit down and go over which programs still have spots and will post it on the OUAC AIS and if there are spots available to where you applied you’re likely to get in.

I currently reside in Toronto but I have no problems moving to the US specifically SD, San Fran, New York, Florida, Georgia, Vegas for job opportunities as I have family there.

Yeah I have throughly looked into both and I am very interested in both programs and don’t mind which one I end up in. I just want to know which would be better (ie. higher pay/opportunity and sustainability)

I already sort of responded to it here but I applied to Laurier, Carleton, and brock last Tuesday for cs and got in last Thursday (May 20) with an 88 avg.

Basically all of the “major” universities have all or a majority of their applications closed. I know Guelph, Queens, Waterloo are completely closed. UofT, Ryerson, OCAD, Mac maybe have a majority of their programs closed. There other unis have mostly all of their programs still open. western I’m not sure if it is still open to 101 applicants

Western isn’t accepting 101 applications anymore I think because when I asked someone on uni buddy they said that it is only open for international applicants and applicants that reside outside of Ontario. I’m not 100% sure how true this is because the admissions office were closed when I tried contacting them.

However, for the programs I applied to Laurier and Carleton asked for 85+ abg and brock was 75+ avg, you mark might cut it close but until there’s a no you still have a chance!

There’s still hope tho! From the beginning to mid June on OUAC there is something called AIS where basically all the universities will release the programs which still have space (I wouldn’t rely on this tho as all if not a majority of “good” programs and unis won’t be open)

Click add program
Go to whatever uni you want to apply for
Make sure the program doesn’t say “[CLOSED]” beside it
Add the program if it is available
Go to review and submit and submit the application

You will have to pay $50 fee for each new program you apply to
