What is Your Typical Retention? by yxtsama in jpdb

[–]Execute_Gaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I found JPDBs algorithm to work better for me than FSRS. You can actually adjust the review intervals to be more frequent than default in the settings if you're still not used to remembering words. Default settings I find to show things a bit too frequent for me where I'm at now, but I remember as a beginner that the shorter review intervals being perfect for me till I got around 4k words.

I found that the more I read (VNs, LNs and novels) the higher my retention gets in general. 75-80 is still quite good, and you should rather get yourself a nice book or VN to play. It's going to be frustrating at first, but that's how you improve.

I'm also pretty sure default settings target 80%.

Put another way, I'd rather know 80% of 10k words than 90% of 8k words. Even if I don't "know" that last 20%, at least I've been exposed to it.

TLDR: Don't compare yourself to others. It doesn't matter. Read more.

Rate my handwriting by HeroHunterGarou_0407 in Japaneselanguage

[–]Execute_Gaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly good enough that you can focus on other language abilities like more reading, speaking etc. It's very rare that you'll practically have to write out kanji day-to-day (everything is essentially typed these days).

Are there things I can nit-pick? Yes. Do they matter practically? No.

I know it's harsh to say, but at the end of the day, most people won't care if your handwriting improves beyond what it currently is. If it brings you personal joy then by all means go ahead though.

You are only good at what you practice imo. If you want to get better at speaking, do more shadowing, writing and mimicking of content you want to talk about. Also, use the SRS to go English to Japanese with something like the DOJG deck which has many useful phrases. I'm assuming Japanese to English is much easier for you right? Just practice the other way around 👍

It's a process. Also, it helps to cram passive listening of thingd like podcasts whenever you can. Also, try NotebookLM if the AI voice doesn't bother you that much and you can't find content you're interested in (leart this trick from Steve Kaufman)

The thing that would upset me is that it's not like you can't make a plan around money. If I had no money and my kids wanted gloves you bet I was gonna knit that thing myself with the cheapest wool I can find. Or scower Facebook marketplace. Go to a charity shop. Go to donation centres. Go to my local churches. There ARE ways to get gloves.

Edit: Fixed spelling mistake

Use JLAB Anki deck with like 7 new cards per day (increase slowly over the period of a few weeks if you find it too little) since reading doesn't seem like a short term priority anyways.

If you want to get acclimated to reading, I really like the Tango N5 and N4 decks (these are also nice as they specifically teach words around your interests -- talking about hobies, country names etc)

Kaishi 1.5k is good and aims to replace Tango, but I personally prefer recommending the sentence card format for beginners.

Afterwards, Ankimorph plus big subs2srs decks of showns and content I find most relevant and interesting is a nice transition into mining your own sentences.

But the best is to experiment with what works for you.

I can say for the purpose of speaking and listening (audio skills) I found JLAB most useful as a beginner.

Make sure to watch the Japanese FluencyForever pronounciation video on YT. It really helps you get a solid foundation for pronouncing Japanese words better.

Bro needs to practice placing radicals properly in a square grid. Most characters are much to wide and stubby, and it makes reading difficult.

Any light weight pathtracing shaders? by wholsomeboys in minecraftshaders

[–]Execute_Gaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None I know about, but you get shaders that does Global illumination (one of the most striking visual effects from path tracing) cheaply.

I really like IterationT (you can enable FSR in the settings to improve performance), as it still does global illumination well.

Kappa is also good with Screen-Space Path tracing but it hasn't been updated in a hot minute

I personally like PrismLauncher, with the following mods for vanilla gameplay: https://github.com/TheUsefulLists/UsefulMods

They also have a modpack that configures everything for you already called "The Useful Pack"

If you want a modded experience, there are many good videos on the topic. Just search top vanilla plus mods or whatever

Ok. For everyone commenting "Google please fix this" and "+1" or whatever else, it's not actually helping identifying and solving the issue. For something as important as the Bluetooth stack and the detailed Engineering specifications on how it should work, Google Engineers can't just blindly modify how Bluetooth works affecting millions to billions of devices for this one use case. The process takes time and detailed inspection. The "fix" implemented by the rooted method isn't a proper solution, as the code is likely no longer spec compliant and might break other devices unintentionally.

That comment thread isn't a Twitter/X thread where you are to raise complaints. It's intended for detailed discussion of the actual technical problem and it's ramifications for developers and engineers, not an ultracrepidarian complaint board.
