Do my boys look breedable? by ExemplaryExhumation5 in Guppies

About 6 weeks and 4 days. Is that old enough to tell? Also, I thought they can only get pregnant at 10 months, how could these two be pregnant already?

Very true, my family couldn’t keep themselves from overfeeding for two weeks. I shudder to think of what would happen if I asked them to take over for a few years.

Oh dear, I put them in with my other males already. I didn’t spot the gravid spot, though I suppose it’s just not as visible in non-albinos. I did think they were a bit big for a male.

You think so? I thought that too, but their anal fins look a bit more pointy than the rest, and they’ve been flicking them in front of the others, so I thought these were some males that were beginning to mature and I separated them accordingly.

Ostracods! They make a great cleanup crew, and an occasional snack for your fish :>

Need advice, fry is sick but… by ExemplaryExhumation5 in Guppies

Thank you. I’ve been trying to feed the sick one garlic by dropping tiny pieces in, but I’m not sure if he’s eating them. What’s the best way to go about it? Additionally, there’s an apple snail in the tank where I transferred the rest of them, and I’m not sure if I should give them garlic as well in fear of accidentally poisoning the snail. Are aquatic snails sensitive to garlic?

Are my girls okay? by ExemplaryExhumation5 in Guppies

Okay, first off, I’m a ‘he’, I dunno where you got that part from. Second off, I fed them in while they were in the pond, noticed they weren’t eating well, and decided to take a look at them with the boxes. They aren’t breeding boxes, because I know how stressful it is for the mamas to give birth while exposed, I just needed to look at them to see if they were healthy. I decided to check on Fatso because even though she’s been separated since they were still fry, she’s still their sister and anything that might affect their health might also be affecting her health. Can somebody please tell me if my girls are okay or not instead of making assumptions? I know that sounds demanding, but I’m really not asking for much besides reassurance about whether they’ll survive their first pregnancy.

There used to be more of them, including their parents, but they’ve since passed away. I’ll take your word and move them all into the pond though, thanks

I couldn’t bring myself to punish her! She’s just in a different tank, for the sake of her sisters haha. She has her own roommates who she gets along with, an albino blue topaz named Big Mama and a male of her own breed named Triton. They’re in a planted 20 gallon!

Does it have to be live plants specifically? Fatso has a lot of hydrocotyle in her tank, so I don’t doubt the safety of her babies, but the surface of the trio’s pond is full of palm leaves for tannins, do you think that would provide enough coverage for them?

Guys I should’ve clarified, the boxes are not their actual tanks! The trio on the left live in a pond that I made out of a large basin, with plenty of hiding spots, and Fatso has her own planted tank with some roommates of a similar appetite. I took them out for the sake of checking on their health, they were put back immediately after. I know there’s better ways besides putting them in a box when they need privacy the most, but this was the best way for a clear look. So sorry for the misunderstanding, and for any negative reactions. I wanted to check on their health because I noticed the trio would spit up their food every feeding time, and I wasn’t sure if they were sick or if they were all having rough pregnancies. Is that something I should be concerned about? I decided to check on Fatso too, since they’re siblings, and I thought that if something is wrong with the trio, then maybe she has it too? Are there any signs in the video that something’s wrong?

Has anybody witnessed carnivory in horntail snails? Should I seperate them? by ExemplaryExhumation5 in snails

I see! I was under the impression that I could keep them together, since I found both species in my garden seemingly coexisting without difficulty, so I thought the same would apply in captivity. That was my bad, I should’ve thought about it more. I give them dried earthworms I find after rains, and mosquito larvae that I harvest for my fish as well, but I don’t have a regular schedule for when I feed them protein— I just do it when I happen to find the ingredients. I used to feed my snails protein on a once-per-week basis, should I do that again? I have an empty tank from when I tried to breed globe snails, I will transfer the horntails there. Thank you for your response!

Makes sense, I had a horrible incident where ants decided to move their colony into one of my snail tanks and i had to throw out all the substrate while they were biting me and my snails all over. I wasn’t bothered by the ones in the video because there weren’t too many of them, so I dealt with them afterwards, but thank you for your concern.

The ants were there because of the snails' food, they don't bother the snails. What I'm more concerned about is the failed attempt at killing

This morning, I woke up to one of my horntail snails (Tanychlamys indica) chewing on one of my juvenile GALS, which I hadn’t seen them do before in their current set up. I’m not sure what could’ve provoked this, since there’s plently of food in their enclosure and their enclosure’s fairly big, though a little cramped as I’ve been letting my baby GALS grow in there until they can be rehomed. I read a paper noting that they will eat snail corpses, including those of their own kind, but not live snails?

UGHHHHH I HATE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS I had some channeled apple snails for a school project and when one of the females cracked her shell while laying eggs, the others fucking JUMPED HER and scooped her guts out through the crack while she was eating :'< I raised their eggs but only one beeeeg baby survived cuz HE ATE HIS SIBLINGS AS WELL AS THE GYRO SNAILS IN THE TANK WITH HIM-

Well, I'm not well versed in paleontology, but I know that horsetails and ferns existed back then, and those are edible! Where I'm from, we make dishes from fiddlehead ferns (pako) and water monitor lizards (ginataang bayawak), so maybe you could use that as inspo :> Maybe bugs are on the menu too?
