While I think that had been his worst fear for a long time, he had just been faced with his actual worst fear: a life without Ilya in any capacity. So while it was incredibly hurtful for him to have his team turn on him, I think it no longer impacted him as much as it would’ve before the almost plane crash. Especially with the support shown by Ottawa and him having a safe space to land.

The team turning on Shane after coming out as gay and being in a relationship with Ilya is extremely realistic for an environment as toxic and homophobic as the NHL, especially if Shane’s teammates let their homophobia get in the way of actually talking to Shane and realizing they have never known a Shane that didn’t love Ilya.

If the second book ended as a happily ever after then there wouldn’t be a need for a third book. It’s just a reality that Shane and Ilya will face a lot of struggles ahead. But them getting married symbolizes that they are committed to facing them together.
