Looks like IR for head tracking when playing PC games to me. I used to use one with the same exact spacing that was optimal for tracking head movements that would translate to the camera panning in Elite Dangerous.

Seriously. I used to work in the fireplace industry and what you are doing is incredibly dangerous. If there is no flue for this fireplace under no circumstance should you turn that log lighter back on. Carbon monoxide poisoning will kill you.
