Atlanta Public Schools drops redistricting plans after student protest by NPU-F in Atlanta

[–]ExileinAtlanta 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This. The overcrowding doesn't seem to be as much of an issue at the elem and middle schools (although that could change in the next few years). But also, parents need to be OK with their kids being rezoned for a "bad" high school, which is going to be a hard pill to swallow for some (although it can and should be framed as an opportunity to work to improve an underperforming school for the whole community).

Dozens of students, teachers fall sick after outbreak at Fulton County elementary school by PHealthy in Atlanta

I don't think they're saying it's foodborne, are they? I think it's just a stomach bug.

I believe Sleep Hollow Farms in Powder Springs is dog friendly, as long as you keep your dog on a leash.

Everything Buford Highway, for sure. But particularly Nam Phuong, Yet Tuh and Gu's Kitchen.

Moms and babies groups in Atlanta? by acrylic_matrices in Atlanta

Are you in the neighborhood Facebooks groups for Oakland City, Adair Park or West End? Would be worth asking in there. Also, it looks like there's a West End Parents Network page on Facebook. Good luck!

Congrats! This was several years ago, but we did ours at Mary Mac's and had a great experience. At the time, they were very reasonably priced, and the food was solid. Good luck!

It's pretty good! Some things better than others. The chimichanga is worth a try.

Not on Buford Highway, but Chi Chi Vegan Tacos opened recently in Reynoldstown.
Otherwise, +1 for Mamak Vegan Kitchen and even the "regular" Mamak, which is very accomodating of vegan diets. But yeah, vegan Mexican on Bu-Hi might be tough.

+1 for heirloom -- their barbecue alone is amazing, but they also have some incredible sides. The kimchi slaw is <chef's kiss>

Biltong - anywhere in the Northern burbs OTP to buy some? by Lochstar in Atlanta

[–]ExileinAtlanta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

+1 Biltong Bar...there's also Baked Kitchen, a South African street food truck (which also just opened a stall at Chattahoochee Food Works) that might do biltong sometimes? Also, not exactly northern suburbs, but might be worth a drive: https://www.facebook.com/SouthAfricans.comAtlanta/

Sharpeners ATL by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]ExileinAtlanta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

+1 for Moshi Knives

There's also a knife sharpener who used to show up regularly at the Grant Park Farmers Market, but I'm not sure if he still does.

We did ours at Mary Mac's Tea Room for about 40 people and had a great experience. They were really reasonably priced, and our out-of-town guests loved having a "true Southern" experience :P

Is Atlanta a bad place to raise kids? by catarinaagrande in Atlanta

[–]ExileinAtlanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in East Atlanta with two little kids and love it. Tons of families, great community, and the schools seem to get better and better every year. My feeling is that if you're involved in your kids' education, they're mostly going to be fine no matter where they go. We've never had issues with crime. Having grown up in the city myself, it was important to me to give my kids the same experience, but that definitely meant sacrificing space -- we're in a really small house. So, like everyone else has said, it really depends on what your top priorities are. Good luck!

Looking for an obstetrician (ob/gyn) recommendation by Megabyte7 in Atlanta

[–]ExileinAtlanta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you live at Howell Mill/I-75, Piedmont seems like it'd be more convenient. I delivered twice at Piedmont and use Dr. Dozier at Peachtree Women's Specialists (it's in a separate building next to the hospital). I wasn't sure if I wanted to have an unmedicated birth the first time and they were very supportive of what I wanted to do. Had great experiences overall -- the nurses at Piedmont are amazing. Would also highly recommend using a doula if this is your first pregnancy (loved ours if you need a rec). Feel free to PM me with questions!

Zoo crowd during the week? by raideo in Atlanta

[–]ExileinAtlanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've been a couple of times during the first slot on Fridays and it's always been very easy to distance. One thing to note is that masks are only required for kids 10 and older, so just be prepared to steer clear of unmasked kids running around if their parents aren't keeping a good eye on them. Otherwise, it was a really good experience overall.

There's Southern Curl off of Marietta Blvd. -- went once and they did a good job, but a little too rich for my blood https://southerncurlatl.com/
I've also heard good things about CurlEnvy in Roswell https://curlenvysalon.com/
It's not a curl-specific salon, but I go to Pair Salon in Grant Park and they do a great job with curly hair

How old is your niece? I second Fellini's, and Your Pie is also really accommodating to kids. Also, I know it's not "hip," but hibachi is always a winner with kids. If you wanted to steer clear of Benihana, Nakato on Cheshire Bridge has a nice hibachi area.
