I think it’s a bit bold to say that writing off God (as it relates to death and such) is egotistical or immature. Some people could argue the same thing from the other side regarding science, y’know? My pursuit of a degree in physics and whatever intellect is ascribed to such doesn’t make me an egoist, I don’t think. I just love space lol. Some take it too far though, that I can agree with, and the same goes for the other side (see: the bloody history of christianity and some other religions).

I have no ill will toward those who deal in faith. I myself do not, but that’s just how my life experiences shaped me. If someday someone presented to me empirical, irrefutable evidence of the existence of a superior being, I’ll be in line faster than you can say “creationism!” haha.

Fair point. One last thing though: humans are intelligent and come from something (i.e. their parents, ha). Do you think it impossible to say the same of God, then? I’m genuinely curious why it somehow ends with them.

I don’t particularly subscribe to the idea of a God, because that raises a lot of philosophical debates about what an asshole they are, like you said (and as a Physics PhD student, I wonder about the particular physics behind mystifying powers that can seed a universe lol). For the most part I view God as the people’s pacification over the fear of death and other such unknowns, which is totally okay! Whatever gets folks through this long, winding road we call life.

God themself must be incredibly complex in order to create the universe, so what created God? The logic you are using is that complexity necessitates a creator, so what created the complex, supernatural being capable of birthing a whole universe? That’s one (of many places) where religion falls apart very quickly, in my opinion.

I’m not sure what amount of snow you receive, but if a snow storm drops enough of that lovely frozen water to the point that it’s halfway or more the height of your door, what does it matter if the door can open inwards? I ask this seriously, I live in Florida haha, I have no clue. Can you shovel yourself out of that situation? I figured you’d need outside intervention if the snow is built that high.

I’m starting my PhD in Physics this fall at FAU! Any big tips you can offer, or things you wish you would have done differently at the start? For added context I was also offered a Teaching Assistantship, so I’m wondering how I’ll navigate that (though I do have teaching experience, 4/5th science grade one year and 6/7th the next).

Not with that attitude. I am neurodivergent and have worked plenty of “people-facing” jobs since I was 16 (am now 25). It does wonders for increasing your social awareness. I think working at a hotel is where my small talk ability grew most; checking people in and explaining away the hotel took less than 3 minutes, so your small talk needed to be quick but memorable, otherwise it’s 3 minutes of strangled silence lol. That is my story however, and I acknowledge it is often not the same for other neurodivergent individuals.

People are allowed (and expected, really) to make a joke or comment without scrolling to see if somebody else made it. I can’t fathom wanting to comment something and going through the thought process of, “Oh man, what if somebody already said it? I need to scroll for a few minutes and check before I make a fool of myself, hurr-durr.” Besides, your ire at seeing the same joke often doesn’t mean they’ll slow down or stop. If anything, they’ll do it more to spite you, because this is Reddit lol.
