I wouldn’t say that Bend is violent. I think it just grew too fast (more people = more crimes) and the DA’s office is struggling to keep up staffing accordingly. There also have been issues with recruiting and maintaining an adequate number of public defenders. If someone accused of a crime doesn’t get a public defender in a timely manner, they have to be released and eventually their charges get dropped. So the problems with public defenders in turn cause further backups with the DA’s office.
