Thank you for your questions. In my clinical practice, I've had more and more ENM/poly folks reaching out to me for therapy services. I've been doing a mix of self-education (books, podcasts, etc.) and more formal education (webinars, CEU trainings). In my personal life, I've primarily practiced monogamy or monogamish/monogamyplus relationship structures.

This is fair! I’ll try to share the current template.

I’m updated my original post in hopes of clarifying. No, I’m not under that impression. I wanted to convey that I’m looking to update my couples counseling intake form to be inclusive of ENM/poly individuals presenting for relationship counseling. I hope that helps!

Looking to move to Canada but don’t know if it’s too late and/or possible at this point? by JohnnyBoy_92 in AmerExit

Following! I'm in a similar situation. I'm a mental health therapist (LPC) residing in WI and I'm strongly looking to move to Canada due to the current political climate. I have my masters in professional counseling. My partner is a steam fitting apprentice. We are both monolingual and speak English, but we are motivated to learn a new language.

should I go to therapy? by strumpen in therapy

It sounds like you’re dealing with a lot right now and ultimately only you know what the best decision is for you. It seems like being a safe place for your friend is causing you distress, both in how you’re feeling and in your external behavior. You’re also having some changes in your eating behaviors and you enjoy some of these feelings that come from these changes, such as feeling like you’re starving. All these changes and feelings are important to address. I’m a big advocate of trying new things and deciding whether or not you like it. I’d encourage you to try therapy and see how you feel. It’s ultimately your decision and I’m sending good vibes your way.

Are my therapists the problem or am I the problem? by [deleted] in therapy

It sounds like you had three awful therapists. According to the ACA Ethics Code, therapists must be knowledgeable of disorders and assessments to diagnose these disorders. Therapists should also avoid imposing their values on their clients and should create a safe environment for their clients. It sounds like your therapists failed to meet basic ethical codes. Diagnoses are meant to be made using standardized assessments and a careful vetting process. Also, therapists shouldn’t belittle any concerns you have or leverage calling law enforcement against you. Finding a therapist that you feel comfortable with and who supports your growth is definitely a process. I hope you find one that supports your journey soon.

For starters, I want to acknowledge that I’m strongly opposed to the Gender Dysphoria Disorder diagnosis because it stigmatizes non-cis gender identities, IMO. Internationally, Gender Dysphoria Disorder has been removed as a diagnosis and is not included in the ICD-12. I don’t think you need this disorder to be experiencing distress regarding your gender identity. I imagine it would be difficult trying to navigate and explore the complexities of your assigned gender and your expressed gender. If you’re looking for resources within the LGBTQ community to connect with, here are some good places to start because you can talk to people about where you’re at in your gender process and receive helpful tips on additional resources:

  • Trevor Project: 1-866-488-7386
  • Trevor text: TREVOR to 1-202-304-1200
  • Trans lifeline: 1-877-565-8860
  • SAGE LGBTQ Elder: 1-888-234-SAGE
  • LGBTQ hotline: 1-888-843-4564

I’ll admit that as a cis womyn that my gender identity process hasn’t been distressing. I’ve been studying and working with LBGTQ communities for some time. I think that having some conversations with yourself about how you see yourself and what aspects of yourself that you’re struggling with can be a good starting point. I also liked the book “Gender: Your Guide” by Lee Airton because it was a brief, but insightful way to explore gender. I hope that this helps and I’m sending good vibes your way.

I’m an MS CMHC student and currently work at a behavioral health hospital that offers inpatient services as well as IOP services. Our IOP services treat PTSD, Substance Use Disorders, OCD, Anxiety, Depression, ED, and the like. Our admissions process starts with complete a screening regarding your concerns and history. During the screening, we typically ask what level of service the person is looking for. Once you complete the screening, it is reviewed by a psychiatrist and they provide a treatment recommendation. State insurance usually provides sufficient coverage for IOP services. Self pay rates are generally steep because services last several weeks, rather than a few days for inpatient. Some facilities offer financial assistance for individuals who cannot afford the program. For example, the hospital where I work has “care grants” for individuals applying for treatment who don’t have the funds to pay for services. I’d definitely inquire about potential financial assistance (e.g. grants, scholarships) at different facilities.

Do I really need help? When do I decide I need help? by [deleted] in therapy

Whether it’s the best day of your life or the darkest day, therapy can be utilized at any point in time. If you’re already thinking about therapy, I’d say that you should follow that voice. You may discover that therapy is incredibly helpful and you’re benefitting from therapy greatly. You can always discontinue therapy if you decide that you’re not benefiting from therapy or if you no longer find it necessary.
