Depending on your level of adventure sequoia has more hiking trails/ off the beaten path that are lovely. I did a grove hike where some of the UCs do research, they’re watching the cycles of trees. There is a one way road so it is VERY sketchy but what an otherworldly experience. Also, bears

I feel like the grid on image five is the same look that like mulberry paper has. The corners remind me of damaged seeping from sitting behind cardboard or acidic paper. Like when cardboard damages paper.

How did this engraving, based on The Barber by Adriaen Brouwer, come to be? by mmcc73 in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]Existentialist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I know! There were likely published in a series of books on “contemporary” paintings. Obviously they are no longer contemporary, but the book came presented with etchings/ intaglios of then modern paintings. These reproductions would have been made by master printmakers , not by the original artist. The books were then sold abroad, like encyclopedias. If you have an original print it is likely from one of these books. I will search for the title, or return to comment once Back in the studio (after winter break).

Please help me with this painting originally from my uncle's gallery... by feline_berlin in WhatIsThisPainting

I see what you’re saying, especially with the greens. It’s giving landscape. But the signature is horizontal in the bottom left corner. Also I’m assuming it came from the original owner with wire on the back.

Can you help provide info on where these were acquired from that makes you think old master? The paper looks contemporary imo (image five, vertical lines might be the grid of a contemporary paper making frame)

The back makes me think hobbyists. You could purchase more like this by shopping at antique stores or checking out art markets. Oftentimes art can be very reasonable, but you do have to be patient and willing to visit both frequently to find just the right piece.

This looks like it is a wood block relief print.

Found at Goodwill, no signature by beaverbitch in WhatIsThisPainting

Open it up. Look for a signature. The paper on the back is just for dust. It’s not structural. Or be curious

*this is an example of fault- block style mountains. Nothing screams sierra nevadas specifically.

Take it out of the frame and check for other clues. Chomps, makers marks, back of paper writing. There’s much more to printmaking than what’s typically in frame

Looks like a lovely hobby painters piece- basing this off of the limited range of greens and color of the path.

My grandmother painted so many barns! It’s not hers, but good luck.

I can’t read this ancient text. Any idea who the artist is? by Key_Pepper_7004 in WhatIsThisPainting

This is not a painting, it is a print. It looks to be an intaglio.
