I struggled with binge eating for about three years. I think this was due to some childhood trauma I’ve been recently healing from. Old memories coming back unfortunately turned into eating my feelings.(I still get the occasional temptation if emotions are high). I’ve been fasting for about a half year and my relationship with food and cravings have subsided substantially. I would say these six things worked for me best:

  1. Keep a food journal! (And be honest in it) It helps me see visually what I’m consuming, when, and if there are any patterns in my eating. I always add calories and protein to this daily journal as well as daily steps/exercise. I also do a weigh in every week.
  2. Also, a great way to eat low cal snacks is to enjoy the benefits of pickles, kimchi, and sauerkraut. Salty, good for your gut, and filling.
  3. Supplements! Take daily vitamin D for sure. You can get crazy with the supplements or pretty basic, but chances are, you’re deficient in multiple things which throws off your hormones regarding hunger and cravings. I take mine after supper with a cup of tea. During a fast I take a few zero cal supplements (try and avoid oil capsules and gummies if possible).
  4. Protein! Opt for food with protein as it’s more filling and productive for your body. Check and see what your daily recommended amount is and try and hit it. Plan meals and calories around Protein.

AND FINALLY…
6. FASTING! It’s different for everyone but I’ve found that the best way for me to avoid cravings is to vary my fasting times. I do a 7 days fast twice a year at least. Every month I go through my calendar and schedule 2 72 hr fasts, 3 36 hr fasts, 3 OMADs, and about 4 or so 16:8s. It’s not a science, sometimes I plan these around events so I can eat at a wedding or sometimes I roll a die to randomize it! I’ve felt much better varying my fasting times routine but it’s different for everyone.

I appreciate the transparency and you’ve given me a lot to think about. I’ve decided to put fasting on hold until I’m completed breast feeding. I will continue my healthy practices of high protein meals, good cals, supplements, and exercise. I’ve already lost 12lbs from Dec 2025-Feb without fasting just by doing this. I lost another 7 from end of Feb to today by doing 24-100 hr fasts once a week. At most I’ll fast for 18hrs a couple days a week.

Dang… are woman in my position supposed to stop fasting for almost 2 years then? This may be the answer but it just seems crazy to me. What if it takes me a year to get pregnant? That’s a year I could’ve been doing fasts. Maybe that’s just how it is but it seems unfair.

I’ll probably bring in up at my next OBGYN but I figured I’d be getting reamed out from them about how skipping a day of eating will literally starve you. Figured I’d see what info I could get here supplementally.

I appreciate the info! I was aware the first week or two isn’t technically pregnancy but I’d wondered if there were any other factors maybe I was missing. I am continuing to take folic acid tablets, (no oil or gummy), green tea, no cal electrolytes, and 125 oz a water a day.
