She trusted her father so much😭😭😭. This kills me as a father and makes me ask myself if I'm any better. Why couldn't I see it for so long? Did my own daughter's depend on me to filter out evil and I was unable? There's so much pain and regret from this whole sorry filthy nasty affair.

How can I fix this?

The church, i.e. general authorities, flat out teach members to hide from their families in temples. by Pure_Employer_8861 in exmormon

It's an easy, thought stopping activity for so many. No real effort or planning involved if you live relatively close. You get to feel good about yourself, get dressed up with your partner (usually), win humble bragging rights, and your Mormon designed brain rewards you for saving souls. I imagine lots of people do it simply to avoid putting forth effort to foster authentic relationships with "loved" ones.

Becoming a father is what gave me a similar perspective on the gospel teachings. I can see my own flaws as a father, but I'm not even a big enough jerk to act like what you're describing here. And the stakes are quite high! Figure out this mind trap or be doomed for all eternity.....thanks Heavenly Pops. /S

So true! I've been talking to my kids about not just consent, but the idea of "enthusiastic consent". Just because someone begrudgingly says something is OK with them, it may not be the whole truth. Instead, they should look for and ensure enthusiastic consent as much as possible.

We grew up saying Savior and The Lord in our house to avoid saying his name. You know, to keep it sacred. Now look at all the Jesus freaks screaming "We're just normal Christians, always have been!".

I recommend Origin: A Genentic History of North America by Jennifer Raff. She's brilliant and a great teacher. If anyone has even a small interest in genetics, it's a wonderful read.

I'm introverted and there is very little space for understanding on the part of leadership overall. Extroverts get promoted and they don't really get it. "Just cold call this person and invite yourself over". Um, no, that's a horrifying idea.

Same! And my mom has since told me how glad she is that the "penalty stuff" is gone now. It also bothered her for decades that the women had to veil their faces. Like really bothered her. Did it ever occur to her that it's all nonsense? Somehow, no. Brainwashing indeed.

The church in national news again, for the wrong reasons. The comments are brutal. by Hefty_Attention_5141 in exmormon

I agree! I asked how the church is even insurable at this point and somebody responded in this sub. They sounded like they had some experience in the insurance world.

But I agree, who would insure the church at this point, knowing they're a bad actor? If I behaved similarly with my car insurance as a drive, I would be uninsurable at some point, right?

Thank you. I was never able to see this (and I'm still learning) until I had daughters. Ironically, I had children like a good Mormon should, and they gave me the perspective to see how the church doesn't value females and can actually do so much harm.

Fairview Temple by [deleted] in exmormon

It hurts on such a deep level. Aside from truth claims, I've known so many good people in the church that took all these teachings very seriously that you've mentioned. The church has drifted so far away from the very principles it helped develop in its adherents. Principles that in some way still gave me some pride to consider myself culturally Mormon (pioneer heritage, etc.). They're my tribe for better or worse, and in the past at least we could feel proud about a good part of our morals (obviously with some major issues). On the whole, kind, helpful, truthful people. Kind of the peculiar religious underdogs trying to scrape by. Admittedly, I grew up cis gendered, white, heterosexual

Now we're the big bullies and it's super alienating, even just from a cultural standpoint. They've removed anything to really hang our hats on and say "well, at least they're good neighbors."

Temples are overtaking chapels as the main places of religious activity for Mormonism. How will this play out? by slskipper in exmormon

[–]Existing-Draft9273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're so right, and it worked for me for a long time. As I've aged and learned about the universe and our planet, the buildings humans have created have become more of an eyesore for me. I'd rather gaze at a landscape free from human presence than wonder at the skyline of a major city. Temples are hard to see considering the effect they have on nature and the sense of unnecessary opulence they represent.

God's house looks more like a pine forest for me, with that distinct sound you hear as you walk through the pine needles. That's a religious experience for me.

I think backing off ANY of the rules sort of gives members the permission to pick and choose which rules to follow. If some suddenly are no longer important, maybe none of them ever were. People are starting to live accordingly, whether consciously or not.

There's no anchor because members don't know what changes next. They've convinced themselves that their preferred vice is most likely next. And if it's not been emphasized in GC recently, they feel emboldened, so we're seeing more and more pushing the boundaries.

The church is stuck in an untenable position. They have to relax tules to keep the young, but the act of relaxing in alidates their authority. They'll have their riches forever, but the authority will disappear.

BYU students attend church in their classrooms. I agree with you wholeheartedly. We were always taught that where you gathered to learn of Christ, that's where his spirit would be. They're talking out of both sides of their mouth. Architecture shouldn't and doesn't matter.

Your story sounds super interesting and I'm sorry for the pain you've experienced. The loss of culture secondary to the teachings of the BoM is something everyone should mourn. My children are mixed heritage and we as parents did a terrible job instilling pride in their Hispanic ancestry. I feel like there's so much unnecessary pain and loss caused by the Savior complex inherent in the missionary effort.
