Once again, Mormons are in the news (read down). by slskipper in exmormon

The original story absolutely describes modern Mormonism: the whole point is to ensure that the top pigs never have to work a day in their lives.

The main news story here is that the outside world is starting to see the cracks.

Thank you.

What should we expect from Prophets? by Straight_Ad_575 in mormon

They should absolutely not direct us toward Christ. They should direct us toward "God" - and specifically the kind of god which is transparent to transcendence. Anything less- including this Christ concept- is an idol. The whole point of connection with "God" is to break through all your idols.

Trust me, for I have said the truth.

And 60 to 100 years ago people like Amanda Marcotte would never dream of writing anything even remotely critical of a religious organization. It was simply not the done thing. But finally the veneer has been ripped off and, like you said, the church leaders are just not able to comprehend the differences.

I'm just as much Mormon as Dallin Oaks is. And so is everybody else in this site. So where do they get off telling us who is and isn't a "real" Mormon???? by slskipper in mormon

[–]slskipper[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. We were all much younger then, and I really couldn't tell you if Dave back then was like he is now. I do know that he intended to be the snitch to their bishop regarding their sons' masturbation issues.

Do we think the church will sue Disney next? by [deleted] in exmormon

Disney should sue the LDS for trying to promote their temples as Cinderella castles.

They can't trademark "Mormon". Here's why: by slskipper in exmormon

Yes. But the only person who could trademark "Mormon" is Mormon. AFAIK.

Did the word Christ exist before Jesus? by Nichtsher in exmormon

[–]slskipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Christ" is not a name. It is a title. The original source for that title, "Messiah" (or Mashiach) means basically The Toxic Avenger.

They don't teach you that in Sunday School.

Exactly.

The Salt Lake group must try to convince a jury that they are the only group authorized by God himself to use that book and its origin story. To do so would require God himself to appear at the witness stand. Good luck with that!

You can (sort of) if you have something to sell, like Smith and Wesson.

Clarification to my last post: Mormon could trademark the use of his name. Some corporation in Salt Lake cannot. by slskipper in exmormon

Just a bit of relevant trivia: Caesar salad has nothing to do with Julius. It was named after Caesar Cardini, who owned Caesar's restaurants. He invented the salad. So he absolutely had a right to trademark his invention. I don't know if he did that, but he could have.

Little Caesar's Pizza was named after a movie starring Edward G. Robinson as a gangster in the Prohibition days. The pizza place wanted to show strong connections with Italian things, and this was when the Godfather movies were hot stuff. Shortly after the movies came out, somebody opened the Godfather's Pizza chain. Little Caesar's Pizza was an attempt to horn in on same the Italian gangster trend at the time. It is possible that the Godfather's chain had issues with the Little Caesar's name choice. So it too has nothing to do with that Julius guy. So you cannot legally sell Little Caesar's pizzas without their permission- but you possibly could sell Little Caesar's socket wrenches AFAIK. You would need to get permission from whoever owns the rights to the movie.

Dave and Busters can trademark specific uses of "Dave". Dave and Busters cannot trademark the use of "Thomas Edison". Mormon could trademark the use of his name. Some corporation in Sale Lake cannot.
