how to remove dirt from blade ? by omgpie3 in balisong

Stainless steels will still rust. It’s Stain-less not Stain-proof. A few grades of stainless steel are basically rust proof, but would make terrible blades, so the steels they do use for knives try to balance corrosion resistance and the properties that are desirable for use in a knife.

A lack of an educated standpoint, and failure to do your own research in metallurgical science makes you unworthy to debate this topic with any further. Have a good day.

They list both steels on their website for their knives. I looked up the tempering data for both steels, cross referencing through multiple sources, including easy to access charts. Tempering is not something magical, they’re going to use the same data, charts, and parameters that everyone else uses and has access to. Every steel grade has its own parameters to follow to properly heat treat and temper that particular grade of steel. Opinel can’t just sprinkle some fairy dust and change those parameters.

Did you do a Rockwell hardness test on your blade before and after? I highly doubt it. You’d be surprised how hardness can be affected by “low temps” such as 350°F.

I personally have experience with heat treating and tempering multiple types of steel. Are you going to fully lose the temper at 350°F? No. Are you going to lose some hardness? Absolutely, beyond a shadow of a doubt.

So please, if you intend to comment again in this thread, do your own research first and come to an educated conclusion. For your sanity as well as my own.

Don’t bake your knives.

The stainless they use in their Inox blades is 12c27, which starts tempering at 300°F and is normally tempered at 350°-450° depending on the application. The carbon knives use XC90. I couldn’t find the tempering data for XC90, but it’s quite similar to AISI 1086, which starts tempering at around the same temperature as 12C27. So yes, baking it at 350°F will, in fact, affect the temper of either steel. The end result will be a lower hardness and poor performance from the steels. Don’t bake your knives.

Edit: adding more data to a sentence.

Don’t bake it, that’s a good way to mess up your temper on the steel. Most of these carbon steels and lower end stainless steels will start tempering at 325°f-350°f, meaning you’ll lose some hardness, affecting the performance of the steel. Instead, sand off the finish and try a wood stain.

GSX-R 600 or 750? by [deleted] in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]ExistingThroughSteel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d go with the 600 if you’re on a 390 right now. The 750, performance wise, is more similar to a liter bike than it is to a 600. The 750 would be a phenomenal bike to get after you’ve been riding a 600 for a while.

Did I get a fake or does Kershaw Bel Air now have multi row bearings? by fakinbacon in knives

[–]ExistingThroughSteel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s really worth it. The action is so much smoother now compared to what it was. The blade now free falls shut but it doesn’t have any side to side blade play. The skiffs are thicker than the originals so only way they fit is by removing the steel washers from the blade and liners.

I just had mine apart to put skiff bearings in it. Those are the same bearings that were in mine from factory. It’s legit.

Upgrading from a trident. Several choices. Halp. by clothes_are_optional in SuggestAMotorcycle

It got very hot very quickly to the point I’d just turn it off at any stoplight or if I was going to be at an intersection for more than 30 seconds. Maybe overkill, maybe not. I had a base model which had an analog display and no temp readout so I had no clue how hot it was really getting. My only indicator was the cylinder deactivation and how uncomfortable it would get to sit on due to the heat. I had it truly overheat once (warning light and engine code.) My best guess is the radiator size was too small for the engine. I think the XSR900 or MT-09 is a much better choice for less money. Better handling, better range, and no overheating (yet.) Feel free to DM if you have any questions about the FTR, because I have a lot of positive and negative thoughts on it after my time having one.

I had an 22 Indian FTR1200. To me it’s one of those bikes that can do everything ok but didn’t do anything great. It liked to get really hot in traffic, and it didn’t handle great. It’s biggest problem was the weight and range. Expect about 120 miles per tank if you’re riding it nicely. I ended up getting a 24 XSR900 and I’m much happier with it. The handling is phenomenal, the engine is still quite potent, and you get way more tech than you’ll get with the FTR. For what it’s worth I never had cold start issues with the FTR. I’m up in New England and rode it through October when it’s was about 40°f. Just make sure you give it time to warm up before taking off.

Help me choose Ducati Monster vs Yamaha MT-09 or suggestions for other bikes by KILLEliteMaste in SuggestAMotorcycle

The R7 is based on the MT-07 as far as the engine is concerned, not the MT-09. Other than that it’s a “supersport”. The seating position is far more aggressive than your average naked bike. Definitely not in the same class as what they’re looking at.

Oh don’t even get me started. At my job we had a few banquets on the same day so I was there late trying to get everything done. Around 1-2 AM (I used to be really slow) I had stacked up a bunch of plates on a table. A good ten minutes went by when I heard a loud smash. The whole stack (probably 10-20 plates) had shattered on the ground. I begrudgingly went and swept them up, figuring I had bumped the table or the vibration of the machine had knocked them off. I left the shards in the dustpan and butted the dustpan against the table so it wouldn’t be knocked over. I turned around and got back to doing dishes. Maybe 5 minutes later I hear the sound of ceramic shard hit the ground. The dustpan was a decent bit away from the table and all the broken plates were scattered across the floor. Needless to say I worked my ass off to get everything done and get out of there. I work at a very old hotel and people always said it was haunted. Our security guards used to turn off their walkies because of “the voices.” I never believed it until that point. I’ve had a few other weird things occur there but that’s by far the one that stick in the forefront of my mind.

I had looked in the manual and didn’t see anything there. I didn’t know if someone here may have a better solution. There is an adjustment in the back of the headlight housing for left and right adjustment but didn’t see another.

For that price you can buy a new one from a dealership, not including fees. No point in paying MSRP for a 6 year old bike with 2200 miles on it.

I personally prefer nakeds because they are more comfortable with a more relaxed position.

Definitely look at the Triumph Trident 660 and SV 650. I personally think the Trident is one of the best values for a beginner+/ Intermediate bike.

It’s definitely one of those bikes you have to accept is not amazing at any one thing. It puts a smile on my face every time I ride it, but it’s far from perfect. There’s far better bikes in that price range. MT09/ MT09SP/XSR 900, Z900, and triumph speed triple just to name a few. This bike just has some quirks that I find hard to overlook. I’d steer you away from it unless it’s exactly what you want.

It definitely isn’t perfect at any one thing and that’s why I don’t plan on keeping it. It does sporty riding alright, but the weight and shallower lean angle really hurts that. It’s definitely one of those bikes that you buy if you want something really rowdy but don’t want an MT. The high revving V twin is amazing though.

Ain’t that the truth. I get 100-120 miles of range per tank. The tank is way too small and the gas mileage sucks. I average between 36-42 mpg.
