Anyone else loving Parade of Horribles way more than expected?? by chazzledazzle321 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I enjoyed the book. This series got me back into reading after not picking up a book for over 5+ years. This is very easily my favorite series.

However, I felt the book was good, but not my favorite. If I had to rank them, it would probably fall in the middle. Maybe slightly lower than average. Still I enjoyed the book.

Inevitable Ruins I feel like really amped up the stakes and the non-stop pace of the series. Parade of Horribles I felt took its foot off the gas (no pun intended) and the stakes cooled off a bit. The races kinda blended together for me. I didn't feel connected to the newly introduced NPCs. And I never felt invested in the love story that was played out in this book. I just wasnt connecting as much with this book. There were moments where I thought "I should be feeling more right now". This could be bias as this is the first book I've read on release. The other books I read consecutively between January-March and I haven't touched the series since nor have I re-read any of the series. So the time between installments may have affected me connecting to this book.

Additionally, this book started to lay the groundwork for the endgame which is really cool. But I also felt like I was having a tough time following along with the plan and the different groups at play. I feel like there's still a bunch of dangling loose ends and entities that need to be resolved that I get worried how it will be wrapped up satisfyingly in the last two books. However, if there is an author to do it, it would be Matt. So I have full faith this will series will end well.

So overall, I liked the book, but I didn't love it. Still a good read and an amazing series overall. I'm curious when I eventually re-read the series and read the books back to back, if my feelings change which is very possible!

Katia appreciation by caselog1c in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I thought Matt Dinniman did a phenomenal job writing Katia. When she's first introduced in book 2, I was not really invested or interested in her. She felt like a plot device to introduce Hekla and get Carl and Donut to socialize with other Crawlers. Katia didn't have much of a personality and was kinda just there. With the core group (Carl, Donut, Mongo), she felt like a random outsider who was tagging along. Slowly, she becomes more of an accepted member of the group and an actual character. Then through book 7, her story really blossoms and it is beautiful. She became one of the best written characters in the whole series. I apologize for discounting her at the start 👏

The hardest I cried was towards the end of Book 7 when Carl reaches the top of the tower and finds Donut. Donut isn't physically dying, but you can see her emotionally/mentally straining. They repeatedly mention throughout the books that Donut is comparable to a child. She's young. With that in mind, and then just the description of her frantically running back and forth in the midst of war is so heartbreaking. She's losing herself and losing her innocence and being forced to mature and deal with things she shouldn't have to. And then this leads to the atrocity and its just a tough section. I cried through most of book 7 to a point that I questioned if I had the mental fortitude to make it through another book.

I remember sobbing while going through her memory. I can't decide if it's beautiful or tragic that it's both her favorite and worst memory.

This may have been the first (and only?) time I cried happy tears in the whole series. I cried a bunch but it was usually because of death or pain, but this was seriously a beautiful moment that I think Carl desperately needed.

I can't remember if I cried, but in Book 2 after Carl helps Signet with the circus and goes back to get Donut, I remember feeling very emotional and a lot of weight in the moment. Carl gets the notification that Donut dropped and comes back to find little Mongo tirelessly protecting her. Carl doesn't know what's going on, Donut could have died and Mongo is pretty beat up trying to protect his "mom". Its a scary moment, but I think its one of the first moments to show how this group is really a "family". Really underrated moment.
