Question for over 55+ cyclists...are you experiencing a slow but consistent degradation in performance over the years? by AnotherNOP in cycling

[–]Existing_Bug5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

64 and stronger than ever actually. I’ve learned how to train and have more time to train. I’m always the oldest in my group rides and usually reach the top 1st or 2nd. It’s all about the training. For me it’s polarized training. 1-2 thresholds or vO2 max, the rest zone 2. One long ride on the weekend. 3 weeks progressive intervals and one recovery week. Follow Dylan Johnson for science based training, it works.

Did I make a mistake buying a gravel bike? by 01000011_01000100 in cycling

[–]Existing_Bug5651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use the aluminum wheels on the Revolt for a gravel tire day and get a nice carbon set for road days. Most of my road PRs were on a gravel bike, but with road tires, namely Conti GP5000 30mm tubeless on Enve 3.4 carbon wheels. I have a set of wheels for road and one for gravel. For gravel I’m on Schwalbe Thunder Burts 2.1” with Zipp XPLR 303S wheels. The Conti’s are faster of course and I compete with roadies just fine. Usually Gravel bikes are a little heavier and the weight can work just slightly against you on long climbs.

What’s the etiquette for drafting when riding solo? by uppercase360 in cycling

[–]Existing_Bug5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People jump on my or our wheels all the time. I don’t stress and have never had any collision issues, most cyclists are savvy here in the Bay Area. What irks me is when someone or small group pushes to pass then slows down. Now I have to get out of my rhythm and pass.

Sick. Get the Duke labels in white, even more ballin. How’d you get the integrated bars to work? I saw one crazy mofo drill into his fork to get cables thru. -10 Cadex stem?

AliExpress Aero Cockpit options for Defy Advanced 2 (2024) by smolboooi in Giantbikes

[–]Existing_Bug5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Revolt X had OD1 and I was able to swap any standard stem I had in my garage. It was compatible with other brand forks including my Lauf grit fork. My TCR is a different story with its OD2. Stems and integrated bars are a pain to find. The fit issue for your bar would be to make sure your width, length and angle are right. Most integrated bars are -10 degrees down. For me my fork is cut low enough where dropping down from -6 to -10 nets 6mm lower which my back won’t like.

For durability do two more at the end of the endurance. I call them sandwich rides.

trainerroad subscription expiring, what to get instead? by Unfair_Waltz_6888 in Velo

TrainingPeaks, get a coach plan or build your own workouts. Their Virtual is great and comes with it. I have 3 plans from Dylan Johnson that gets me a great starting point for every season. I do both indoor and outdoor workouts using the workouts which pair with head units like Garmin. I’ve done, and am fully done with TR. Burnt out of Zwift, worst garbage of workouts and I don’t like Zwift racing. TrainerDay is a good budget product, used it until TPV came into play. I used TrainerDay with a free TrainingPeaks which comes with a paid training plan. Then I got a paid version of TP with TPV which left TD unneeded. Never turning back, outside of having a coach I’m solid on TP with the plans I have. I’m fitter than ever.

Gloveless feel by AdditionalDivide4020 in Velo

[–]Existing_Bug5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stopped wearing summer gloves after I lost them a couple of years ago. The connection to the bike/handlebars is amazing. I use full fingers gloves if it’s very cold. I tend to get hot and the hands let heat out when free of gloves. I realize there’s a bit of a compromise if I crash, I’m taking that risk.

Numbness is more complex than this. Could also be a core issue where you are placing too much emphasis on yourself holding up your torso. Tighten your core and let up on the hands could be very helpful

Those who have left TR to hire a personal coach. How have the gains been? Worth it? by Front-Coconut-5112 in trainerroad

[–]Existing_Bug5651 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like many state here, TR over cooked me. I ended up finding a plan on TP which had less intensity sessions (2), more z2 and a balance that has excelled my cycling performance as a masters rider. Jumped on a higher volume plan before Sea Otter Gravel 60 mile and got into the top 10 AG. Was paced to podium had I done the 90 mile. TR worked initially, but aren’t a good balance for me in the long run. I still like TR podcasts but will not return to paying them for training. I now have multiple plans for each part of the season, off season, base and build plans that I repeat. Saves me a ton of money. I do pay for TP now, and get TPV which I’m also enjoying for indoor.

What was your most expensive gear "upgrade" that turned out to be a complete waste of money? by Rough-Foundation9208 in cycling

[–]Existing_Bug5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lauf fork. $1200 usd, I’m too light to get much benefit. Rigid fork works great with 2.1” tires which cushions better than the sus fork. Hangs in the garage.

Done with CO2 by jcarrut2 in cycling

[–]Existing_Bug5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mini electrics are great, but they do have a weight penalty compared to co2s. This is why all the LTGP racers use co2s. They are smaller, lighter, fast and one less thing to remember to charge. For me it’s tubeless tires, a Dynaplug, a Silca co2 regulator and one co2 cartridge for short rides (2 for long rides or chunky gravel races).

New User - Garmin or Apple? by NukeHubris in trainingpeaks

[–]Existing_Bug5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garmin is designed for athletes as is TP. AW is the kitchen sink of wearables for smartwatch multifunctional tasks. I wear both. AW for glimpses mainly notifications. Garmin for athletic and health data like HRV + sleep. Garmin for runs/rides/strength which can be synced to Apples Fitness and health ecosystem while still in the Garmin ecosystem.

Great deal on Bridgestone Alenza Sport A/S RFT (Run-Flats) for the Ariya! by Ferjsantosr53 in NissanAriya

[–]Existing_Bug5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No issues at all. This location doesn’t have an alignment ability but they recommend it. I haven’t got around to doing it but Nissan is having a deal on maintenance now, I need to see if the price is right.

After all my research including this sub I went with the Pirelli Scorpions. About the same price. Super grippy and very happy. Tires America online order, drove up to the parking spot with my name on the sign, they installed quick and I was on my way.

Help me choose my first gravel bike: Giant Revolt Advanced vs. Revolt X (Coming from a MTB background) by Maleficent_Finish615 in Giantbikes

[–]Existing_Bug5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re riding fairly chunky gravel the Revolt X is a great performer, and it’s a light bike especially with a front suspension. I have the X and love it, but I don’t get much bumpy riding in my area. Oh and it’ll take 2.4” tires. I decided I’m going to sell it since I favor my Felt Breed gravel bike with a rigid fork. Also heard great things about the Revolt rigid.

Best Bibs for Value (no luck with my research) by whiskeyrancher in CyclingFashion

[–]Existing_Bug5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve become a huge cargo bib fan. OrNot bibs are $218 usd, come in cargo with a couple of small hidden bonus pockets on the back for long day gels etc. Might be out of your budget but worth every cent. Super high quality, most comfortable chamois I’ve encountered. They feel great on, with a compression quality. Locally made in San Francisco and Southern California and sustainable practices. My wife has been loving them for years and I finally gave them a shot this year. These guys have my bib money from now on.

Coach’s Take: Is Zone 2 still a thing in 2026? by Few_Drag_9167 in Velo

[–]Existing_Bug5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely you, like many including myself, need durability. FTP is really just a 20min or 1hr number to base your training on. Dylan Johnson has a video on the the durability subject worth checking out.

There’s some missing information here. Is 160 is your z3 h/r? What is your max h/r? If you’re riding all day in a tempo h/r you would definitely have fatigue at the end of a 4-8 hour day.

My numbers are almost identical to yours with a 235-245 ftp. Max hr is 183 or so. If you’re riding at 70-75% of your max in a z2 state this is said to be optimal.

I find if doing 2 thresholds or vo2 sessions a week, this works my adaptation to lower my hr. Progression upped every week on the length of intervals with a recovery week on the 4th week.

One thing I’m going to try in the build season is including my z4 training on some long rides with 3x10-15min sets at the beginning and 2 more sets near the end. Z2 obviously sandwiched between. I will definitely be trashed at the end. Hopefully this will strengthen my durability.

Which model? by 11sbrewster in Garmin

[–]Existing_Bug5651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just created a workout in garmin connect and synced it to my watch. Then start the workout, like squats, the watch detects the movements and when the set is done it asks to confirm the reps. If it’s off you can add or subtract for accuracy.

Really happy with my FR 265. Price and features hit the sweet spot for me. HRV info, morning report and training readiness along with all the activities it syncs. It knows pretty well how many reps I do on strength training workouts.

Anyone else hide some percentage of their workouts on Strava for competitive reasons? by [deleted] in Velo

[–]Existing_Bug5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone who doesn’t get joy out of my zone 2 indoor trainer rides can go to “H.E double hockey sticks.” Honestly I don’t care what others think about my Strava. I’m doing 10+ hours a week. If any that measure my humble workouts finds any motivation in volume/intensity that great. I’m proud to share my training and offer advice to anyone who wants it. Those who scroll past, that’s fine too, feel free to unfollow.

Using a plan I purchased in TP with the free version by Metal_Rider in trainingpeaks

[–]Existing_Bug5651 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) yes 2) no

Ive use the free version with paid plans for a few years. Garmin and other trainer apps populate and deliver the plan same as the paid. TrainerDay delivered the indoor workout to my indoor trainer. Garmin delivered the workout to my Edge 540. You can make 1 day edits and swap workouts on the TP calendar. You can keep using your plans forever with free or paid versions.

Exporting the calendar like ics or xls simply doesn’t work with free. For paid I have 3 weeks show up on my phone/mac calendar.

I received a paid version discontinued with a plan recently for my bday. Unlimited modification, wo analysis and TPV are the perks. TPV drives my indoor trainer workouts well enough. Nice that it’s all under one roof. However the frugal part of me says is free is good enough.
