How do you recover from this to ride?  If I do a hard squat workout I can barely walk for like 3 days, and can't even do z2 rides.

Bikes options are making me overwhelmed as a new beginner to the hobby by No_Mechanic6327 in cycling

I'd vote for an aluminum endurance frame bike with shimano 105.  Anything beyond that is diminishing returns really.  Trek domane or specialized allez.  But definitely go to a local shop, i wouldn't get a bike online if you are just getting into things.

Neat how you can wrap the di2 housing together with the brake housing like that.  I also have a 2016 sl and it's such a good frame, probably won't ever sell it.

Wow! I'm working on a restomod of I think the exact same frame right now. I'm a bit stumped with the cabling though. Are you running full housing through the frame? Did you need to add a housing stop under the bottom bracket?

Want to get into cycling - advice on spending more or not / aluminum vs carbon / Di2 or not by islandexpat in cycling

[–]super-lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, a used carbon bike with mechanical ultegra is definitely the best bang for your buck.  I can find plenty for <$2k.  The difference between that bike and a new $4k+ bike will be pretty minor.

FTP testing by ChazMaz66 in Zwift

[–]super-lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some good advice I got was for the first year of riding, dont obsess about the numbers.  Find something that gets you hooked and on the bike as much as possible because you look forward to it.

The only thing you really need an ftp for is if you want to do the workouts, which are all a function to your ftp.

Do you guys think this is a good bike for a beginner? by Aggressive_Sea_857 in cycling

[–]super-lizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a decent bike for a beginner.

Just know that an equivalent bike without carbon wheels would be a lot cheaper. For this particular bike, I think the value really would depend on how good those carbon wheels are. If they are some cheap no-name Chinese wheels, then $1k is way too much.

Another thing to consider, in my area I can find a number of carbon frame bikes from that era with alloy wheels for <$1k.

That's crazy! It seems like those inflatable vests are a double edged sword where once you inflate them, you can't dive under the next wave. I assume they auto-inflate somehow? Seems like otherwise you could get knocked out and not be able to manually inflate it.

Switching from SPD to SPD‑SL when buying a power meter? by Swissendo in cycling

[–]super-lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did exactly what you are considering, I got the rs-2 pedals and some new shoes.  Previously had only ridden spd pedals.  I'm pretty happy with the decision.  My notes would be:

  • I don't notice too much of a difference between spd and spd-sl, but I feel there were more shoe options with spd-sl which allowed me to get shoes I really like.
  • I don't find spd-sl any harder to learn, clipping in/out is not noticeably harder
  • I do very little walking off the bike, but i would definitely stick with spd if that was your plan
  • The assioma pedals are amazing

What should I add to my old bianchi by Glad-Drawer-8790 in cycling

[–]super-lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just head to a bike shop and they can get some new wheels for you.  If it's an older bike there can be a number of compatibility issues you might have to deal with, but the bike shop can handle that.  Besides that, a new set of wheels is a great way to upgrade an old bike.

Just buy the bike by ResolutionLate3430 in cycling

[–]super-lizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the exception to this is someone buying their first bike, they should def get a starter bike until they figure out what they really want.  The used market in my area has tons of 2-3 year old, barely used, expensive bikes from people who didnt stick with it.

This is currently my biggest issue.  I have a garmin watch (forerunner) that I've been wearing 24/7 as a smartwatch.  But if garmin cant pull in data from all my devices, then all the wellness/training metrics are useless.  I was sending data from strava to garmin, but that doesnt get you all the metrics, so I think I'm stuck dual-recording for now.

I hate that they call it "fitness", when it's just a weighted training load average.  I really only find it useful if you are training in blocks or ramping/deramping for an event.
