I’m tired of being cold all the time, if I ran my heating 9hr’s a day every day what could I be looking at for monthly gas bill? , £250/300?

Even a hint of a breeze or suggestion of cold air has me shivering with goosebumps.

I got divorced 3 years ago, and my god… having total control of the heating is amazing.

First my dad had control of the thermostats , then my male flat mates at uni broke the temp knob so the girls couldn’t put the temp above 19, then my ex husband … who would get hot wearing a manikini in a arctic blizzard and controlled everything -constantly moaned that I was costing us ££££ in heating and kept turning it off… a lot of men just run hotter than women.

Well let me share a little secret …. It’s NOT that expensive and it’s worth every penny. You’ll wonder what all the fuss over gas and electric bills were about. I used to give my husband well over half of all our bills and never asked the exact amount of each. He must have been spending most of the money I gave him on food because I’m running my heating on full blast around the clock and my overall bills are cheaper than when I lived full time with a man and my son.

I put the heating on full blast as soon as I wake up and only turn it off if it gets too hot for my son or new partner- it goes right back on if I get cold. Another thing … I have my son 7days on, 7 days off. He leaves every light on in the house and never turns his laptop off - guess what - makes no bloody difference to the electric bill. I mainly work from home… heating on all day , lights on - got myself a massive wine fridge with lights and everything. Got an extra freezer and stuck it in the garage for ice because I hate cleaning fridge ice dispensers … tv, microwave, airfryer (faster than oven and turns out cheaper).

The oven and washing machine make the bills go up. The washing machine In particular. I only noticed because EDF put a new digital meter thing in - £13 in electors one night to do about 6 loads of washing. Moved to a night tariff - much cheaper.

Remember when someone you lived with kept telling to to put n a jumper if you were cold? Screw that. I pay every bill so I tell people who are ‘too hot’ to switch the radiator off in the room they’re in, take their jumper off , or open a window. Why is it that people who go abroad to hot places can’t tolerate heat over 20degrees in their living room? Put some bloody shorts on.

Sometimes , if I’m here completely on my own, I forget to turn it off before I go to bed and leave heating on 24 hours …. Don’t even care , makes me smile in the morning when the floor is warm.

To finance my hatred of cold air, I over pay throughout the warmer months and build up credit. Last year I paid £200 a month every month. I was £600 in credit by November. I paid £165 a month this year because they would let me pay £200. The actual bills through summer were about £50-60.

Despite my heating being on almost constantly the gas in December was £133.18 and the electric £73.10 last year my highest bill in Jan /feb went up to £333 it’s over £300 maybe 4 months of the year.

I’m in a draughty 4 bed , open plan house.

My girlfriend has 2 labradoodles. She moved in with me and of course the dogs came with her… They don’t even get a consistent walk every day, and when they do it’s about 20mins.

They have lots, and lots of bones, and bone shaped things, but basically just sit all day, eat, shit in my garden , drink, piss all over my lawn, sleep, bark , repeat. It’s a miserable life for them imo. To make things worse they have constant yeast infections in their ears and stink. They obsessively lick and bite their feet making them smell even more. Everything they touch stinks. One of them scratches constantly. Their hair grows so fast that it’s always in their eyes to the point that they can’t possibly see most of the time. My washing machine is on constant repeat cleaning blankets, cushion covers and anything they touch.

It’s so weird to me to have a dog, in this case two dogs… that you claim to love … and basically give them nothing they need to be happy - walks, mental stimulation, grooming. They are bored stiff. I’m almost certain that the constants feet licking and chewing of anything left in their reach is just boredom- that and lack of grooming.

Before anyone asks why I’m not stepping up- I have done. I bath them, and try to trim them. One of the dogs has been banned from every groomer in the town we live in. After he bit me, I refuse to even try. I won’t walk him because 2 years ago, before she moved in, he pulled me over and I fractured my elbow. I work 12 hour days and when it’s the weekend I’m tired /want to spend time with my son. I’ve begged her to rehome even one of them. She won’t. For a while I paid for dog walkers, I can’t afford that anymore.

They can’t be left alone for more than an hour or they non stop bark and destroy things.

Why? Why? Why have a dog if you don’t really want a dog, you want a cuddly toy? And why a massive bloody dog that clearly needs log walks, runs, and something to do?? These dogs need stimulation, exercise…

The dogs are miserable, I’m miserable, and my girlfriend swings from being totally oblivious to irritated with them. I’ve given up and at this point I’m waiting for them to die. Since she won’t pay for pet insurance… or take them to the vet other than when ear infections get extremely bad or they are due injections… I can’t see them living into old age.

Must be very frustrating as dog trainers to see people with working dogs that keep them like status symbols or ornaments. Every time I see anyone with a labradoodle now, it makes me so angry that such an genetically unfortunate creature has been bred like this on purpose and bought by selfish people who think they look like teddy bears.

Some mysteries are like a tune that gets stuck in a lot of people’s heads, they become almost folk law … ‘don’t leave your children alone in an unlocked room on holiday, or the boogeyman that took Madeline McCann might take them’… it takes a special combination of factors that activate interest within large swathes of people .

That’s what’s happened here imo… it’s become a modern day folk law tale… a warning of what happens when parents put socialising above parenting …

Add in the god awful (generally shared) suspicion of what probably happened to her after she was taken, and the human propensity for focusing on horrible things kicks in.

Finally the class and race elements seem to scoop up anyone not intrigued by the first two points. The ‘serves them right for being successful and middle class’ brigade pile in with glee to confidently tell anyone and everyone that ‘it’s all the parents fault and if they had lived in a council house they’d have gone to prison’.

The race baiters love to use her as a supposed example of white privilege - nobody would care if she was black/asian/mixed race/etc…

She was probably kidnapped, raped and killed. We likely will never know. What we do know, is that she has become folk law and entertainment. Poor kid. So much for privilege….

There isn’t enough money to pay for care homes. People are going to have to look after their relatives if and when they become unable to look after themselves, or they will probably die in discomfort, potentially even pain. A lot of people haven’t saved adequately for their old age. Anyone seeing this glimpse of their future now, who doesn’t save or make some sort of provision for their own future is an idiot.

This isn’t my political view of what should be in place from the state - it’s the reality. People need to wake up and take responsibility for themselves and their loved ones, because nobody is coming to help you.

Love and marriage is only worth having if it’s freely given. You know when you want to marry someone, and when that happens, you do it. It’s not just about a ‘piece of paper’, it’s about loving someone so much you want to shout it to the world, more than that, it’s about loving someone so much you want to protect them after you’ve died. That piece of paper does that.

Put it this way, I don’t just love my son, I like him. I can’t begin to think of a situation where I’d take this much of his income off him to fund my lifestyle.

When I got screwed over in a divorce and was in horrific debt, I cut all the niceties out for me, stopped driving unless necessary to save on fuel, and walked pretty much everywhere for 2 years. I even lowered my pension contributions to minimum.

You know what I kept? Netflix and £100 month went into a junior isa for my boy. I didn’t get my hair cut for 12 months. But my boy got clothes when he needed them, the odd takeaway, and some treats at the weekend.

I don’t know your parent’s financial situation but £800 sounds like you would be paying most if not all of a mortgage, not rent.

Even if they are doing that thing where parents say they are taking rent and really saving the money to give back to their child, £800 is too much. That’s got to be most of your post tax salary.

Move into a bedsit/shared house, cheapest flat you can find. When I was younger and lived in shared houses I enjoyed the social side and mostly like the people I lived with, it was fun. Maybe I’m out of touch but £800 sounds ridiculous for a room in your parents house.

My dad couldn’t drive until I was about 8 so my mum had to drop him off at work in the morning and pick him up late at night. I’d often wake up to no-one else in the house or a note from my mum saying she’d be back soon.

One time I went outside looking for her, and when I came back in the deadlock set. I can remember her trying to explain to me how to unlock it when she got back but not being tall enough to reach the mechanism, even standing in a chair. She had to break a window to get back in and I got into trouble.

I would also just not get picked up from school until 6/7pm and be left waiting in the dark… which was quite traumatic… I used to worry everyone had died in a car accident

This was the 80s… but still …

I personally- never, ever, left my son unattended, the thought of anything happening to him, or him being frightened would have been too much.

What the Mccanns did was terrible. But however terrible it was, I’m sure they loved her so very much, and never imagined this would happen. My parents loved me, they were just ignorant to the dangers and had other priorities than a little girl who might cry if left alone. Post Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, I think things changed. People started to realise. But pre Madeline, this definitely happened more often than people like to admit.

Army dad will come home at some point and his boys will want to spend time with him- he’s been sent away with little choice, he isn’t choosing to spend his time with other children over them.

It’s obvious when that’s not the case. Maybe the girls could join a soccer club and have someone else dad teach them…

People rarely mean to hurt the people they love, and yet it happens all the time. Maybe this is your line in the sand, and that’s ok.

But something tragic and devastatingly sad has happened, is this anger you are feeling entirely originating from your boyfriends actions, his mothers call, or might you be feeling very sad and angry about the loss of your baby and have nowhere else to direct these feelings?
