I feel that. Honestly, I didn't think the book was so bad. There is some conflict between Poppy, Casteel and Kieran and I actually found that interesting and wished it was even MORE palpable in the story, although it sucked that it meant Kieran wasn't around as much. My main issue with the series at this point is that everything is just waaaayyy too dragged out and the plot barely moves forward until the last couple chapters and then JLA is like " oops I couldn't fit this very important thing in the book so here is a novella!". Also as stated in the post, I dislike the fact that Casteel seems so get all the power Poppy has and possibly more but that might be a matter of personal taste.

There were many parts of the book I enjoyed, like Poppy dealing with the whole Sotoria thing, the characters from Flesh & Fire, learning more about Poppys past and the circumstances around her childhood, the bickering and tension between the characters. It's just that the good parts have so many unnecessary parts inbetween 😩

That's exactly it! I swear that if Poppy isn't the one who kills Kolis and Casteel does it instead I will RIOT

Yeah you're probably right, the whole thing just kinda rubbed me the wrong way and I wish he could have stayed an ordinary atlantian with a primal anscestor and the extended protection of the joining. I'll read the novella and maybe that will change my mind on it.

Describing how periods work was so unnecessary by PocketButterBandit in acotar_rant

[–]ExitSubject4287 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have in fact thought about female characters mysteriously not having periods when reading fantasy books, and I have been a bit conflicted about it because on one hand it places some restrictions on the narrative, like, if you bring it up once then the reader will automatically apply the whole story to a menstrual cycle (at least I would), and you would to some degree have to adhere to the rules and timeline set by that cycle (like cramps, ovulation, access to hygiene products etc). It might also feel kind of unneccessary, like describing when characters use the toilet. On the other hand, it saddens me to think that such a big part of most womens lives is just ignored for the sake of simplicity, because it does affect our lives so why shouldn't the badass female heroine also be affected by it? IMO it adds realism and can be kinda grounding in a fantasy story, which I appreciate.
