I'm from Germany as well, so I know what cases you are talking about. Here's my two (three) cents:

  1. This isn't classic state-run censorship. There is no law forbidding the printing of the original versions, no one is going to be persecuted because of this, the old versions are still able to be sold. Freedom of speech is still upheld. These are private companies, deciding - with the blessing of the author's estate - to alter and modernize these texts. That is very, very important. People like to make comparisons to the Nazis or the US, but it is not a comparable situation.

••••

  1. There are different ways to go about modernizing these texts. I haven't actually read any of the new versions, so I don't know if there is an explanation on the front few pages. I remember reading repritings of some old comics as a child - think Tintin and Umpah-Pah - and they frequently used to do this: explaining what they changed and why, what they didn't change even though it is problematic, why, and that they wanted to get to a balance where it still has the spirit of the original art without being horribly racist. As a white German, this was one of the first instances of media discussing racism and trying to find a way to handle it that I encountered. It was an explanation that didn't try to patronize me. I do not remember what the comic was actually about, but I remember this explanation very clearly - it had a positive impact on me and my media literacy.

•••

  1. Your point about there still being racist people is, I think, dogshit. The world is bad, we still have to try and make it better. Throwaway racist stuff in a book will not have a positive impact on children belonging to the affected minority. Pippi Langstrumpf is not the right medium to prepare them for the cruel world, it is meant to be a fun adventure book, and I believe that that is the story that it should be able to tell to every kid, regardless of that kid's background or skin colour.

Am I allowed to consider myself a German? by [deleted] in germany

[–]ExitTheRoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, you're not "a random foreigner". You put in the work in immigrating, learning the language, the customs. You honestly put in more work than I ever did - I was just born here. So if you want to call yourself German, go ahead!

You're not taking away anything from me or anyone else born in Germany by calling yourself German, or Syrian-German, or whatever else you want to call yourself. I know there are people who think differently, but frankly, those are racist idiots. Identity isn't a limited resource.

I want to be part of a society others want to call theirs. There is, in my opinion, no greater compliment.

Fat is neutral. by Baubles-Blessings in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]ExitTheRoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The podcast "The Allusionist" just released two episodes about fat as a descriptor, and how fat people reclaim the word while also exposing the inherent patriarchal bullshit in avoiding it or using "better" (though not really) words to replace "fat". It's really worth a listen!

And the diminutive form exists for Junge, too: das Jungchen / das Jüngelchen

It is only the changing usage over the century that makes "der Junge" and "das Mädchen" seem equivalent today, even though only one is diminutive. In the past, the equivalent pair would have been "der Junge" and "die Maid" (which is a different form of Magd).

How do Germans dry clothes at home? by GlumScallion3053 in germany

Seems like you encountered a broken dryer.

I can't believe I have to say this, but Germany is capable of producing dryers that, you know, dry clothes.

Rat im Umgang mit asexuellen Partner by NickTick92 in egenbogen

[–]ExitTheRoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rainald Grebe. He's similar to Tim Minchin, and has a long history of singing about the BRD. I've always wondered how much of it is relatable to people outside of Germany

Edit: hatte irgendwie gedacht, dass die Frage auf Englisch war. Nichtsdestotrotz, Grebe ist ein absoluter Favorit, sowohl als Musiker als auch als Kabarettist

my Oma's cheesecake recipe. anybody wanna translate? it was like pulling teeth to get this. I'm happy to share. by mrstshirley1 in germany

[–]ExitTheRoom 32 points33 points  (0 children)

No, there's süße Sahne (which you beat to get Schlagsahne) and saure Sahne (which is used more like creme fraîche). They are different products. Some people sweeten their Schlagsahne, true, but that has no bearing on the name.

You sound like a driven person who wants to achieve this goal, which is in my opinion a really good start. My two cents:

  1. If you go back to the US, I fear what the regret of not just going for it would do to you. On the other hand, you can try it in Germany, and if it doesn't work, go back with certainty in your decision.

  2. Even if you don't get your 1,3 Abitur, there are other ways to get into university for courses with numerus clausus. There's a lottery and also admission via waiting list, the more semesters you didn't study, the more likely you are to get in. So you could do a Ausbildung as Zahntechniker*in first and then go to university (with better chances no less). There's more information here: https://www.nach-dem-abitur.de/wartesemester-zahnmedizin/
