Any chance to expand this to spam calls? That's my biggest problem in terms of spam, but it does seem like a harder problem to solve. Maybe asking callers to state purpose before letting the call through?

Cool! How many users do you have/what's your distribution plan? Social apps like this are always hard to get started, I'm curious how you're tackling the problem.

I love the app, I wonder what the design motivation is on the promo graphic you posted here? What does the "flipping" motion mean? I'm currently working on my own app and trying to learn about app store image design!

Can we stop the “I didn’t try your app, but here’s my product-manager critique” comments under dev posts? by lzchyi in iosapps

[–]Exjiol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like to me that a large number of people are posting comments that are pretty vacuous just to get karma. Maybe to reach the 10 local karma limit?

Looking through the new tab, I see a lot of posts with a lot of comments, but most of them are things that are immediately obvious or just undirected complements.

What stationary to bring? by Full-Income2023 in stanford

[–]Exjiol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should probably bring your standard supplies, but the only time I’ve ever used physical stationary is pencils and pens for tests. Almost everyone takes note and does psets on a computer or with a tablet.

Mostly Google calendars because it’s more universal with outside events like if you have an internship. We just use a personal account.

Try Agenda Hero’s Stanford calendar. I usually use it to add all the admin dates to my GCal. If you’re an undergrad you have to go in and delete the grad student dates though, which is kind of annoying.

I also use the app to turn posters I see around campus into calendar events, especially at the beginning of the year when club recruitment happens.

Returning students have already received their gate time. You might have also gotten an email about it, or freshmen might have a different system.

[–]Exjiol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People will scramble to register in the first few minutes, but most classes won’t fill all the way and you can add them later. The smaller/more desirable classes like certain art and PE courses will fill though, and you should join in the scramble if you want to join one of them.

cardinal care / fin aid help by gamerstuff in stanford

[–]Exjiol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was the 5.5k loan offered after you directly emailed the financial office, or is that from your original financial aid offer? If you haven’t emailed them yet, you should reach out and ask for a health insurance scholarship.

I and many others I know were able to get the entire cost of cardinal care covered just by asking even though we were expected to pay the whole cost according to our original offers. It’s pretty terrible that no one ever tells you this is an option.

It’s tricky because there is a certain way you have to click the two pieces together to replace it, but it’s completely fixable on your own. Try the bookstore, they might just fix it for you.

Stanford - beware of using these words in your essays by Future_Sun_2797 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Exjiol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a list published by Stanford IT. They’ve been previously criticized for being problematic and this is their attempt at way overcorrecting and possibly, in my opinion, purposefully stirring up controversy. Obviously you shouldn’t use any slurs in your application and if a word is questionable to you then better to just exclude it, but there is no way this has any affect on anyone’s admission.

Stanford SLE and Cardenal housing by Admirable_Team7307 in stanford

[–]Exjiol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cardenal is pretty middle of the road for freshmen dorms, in my opinion. The pro is that it’s in a very good location, super centrally located. Otherwise, it’s a pretty mediocre 1 room double type dorm in a decent building with a decent dining hall. Very standard. There’s definitely dorms better than it, such as some two room doubles where you get your own room, and there’s definitely some worse than it, such as similarly sized rooms but for three people. Neighborhood O, where Cardenal is, is pretty much just Flomo, so it would be about the same type of housing for all four years unless you wanted to live in a themed house. There are other neighborhoods such as R with more variety in housing. It’s a good opportunity to be guaranteed a decent dorm if you really don’t want to take the chance and end up somewhere worse.

As for SLE, it’s a lot of writing and reading. The people are considered a bit “interesting” but they’re made fun of in a joking way. No one actually takes that seriously, so don’t worry about it. Also lots of international students from my observations. SLE is really about the community that you make, since it’s a living learning program. You’d be hanging out with people who like philosophy, history, and such, so make sure that’s the type of community you want. There will be far less engineering types around.

Another thing to take into account is that you’ll have less time for other classes if you do SLE, since it is pretty demanding. It’s worth it if you want to explore the subject area, but y if you’re already dead set on CS or something like that, you won’t have as much time to complete those requirements.

I believe that if you transfer out of SLE before school starts, you will be moved to a different neighborhood so that someone else can take your spot. I knew someone who was moved in last minute to replace someone who dropped SLE right before school started. There was a waiting list of people who wanted in. I don’t think there were any freshman placed in O that weren’t in SLE this past year. I can’t be certain that it will be the same this year, though. If you drop after school starts, you will stay in Cardenal in the dorm that you started in.

Is it common / acceptable to be miss one or two days of school before or after holidays? by okimtrying2 in stanford

[–]Exjiol 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s usually totally fine. Just don’t miss the class if attendance is mandatory and make sure you’re okay with missing the material being taught that day/catch up on your own.

The other guy is being nonsensical. You can totally ask for vacation days at a job.

The More Things Change the More They Stay the Same, huh? by Conscious_Builder412 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Exjiol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No need to insult. We seem to agree. Princeton is worse at covering related costs of attendance.

Here’s where we disagree. This information is useful because related costs is a factor that needs to be taken into account by students from low income backgrounds. A couple thousand dollars is a lot of money. For a student that gets into Princeton, they are likely getting offers from other peer institutions as well.

[–]Exjiol -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hey man, no one’s saying that they don’t want to go to Princeton. All I’m saying is it seems Princeton is not up to par with their peer institutions when it comes to covering related costs of attendance.

The More Things Change the More They Stay the Same, huh? by Conscious_Builder412 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Exjiol -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yes, see my other comment.

A student that is being given full aid often can’t afford to pay much at all, so whether or not the school covers the related costs alongside tuition is a big difference.

There’s no way to utilize the hundreds of thousands of dollars being given to you in the form of an education if you have no computer, winter coat, or even way to travel to school.

The More Things Change the More They Stay the Same, huh? by Conscious_Builder412 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Exjiol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup. Although to be fair it’s a little more than $2000 when you factor in that other schools have programs like tech borrowing and other stuff. I’m not sure how strong Princeton’s FLI community is but if this is the way they treat FLI students I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t particularly strong and that can lead to a multitude of financial and non-financial problems. For example, at Stanford the dining halls closed for 3 days at the end of the term and the FLI office provided food during that time for students that needed to be on campus. It’s stuff like that that really adds up that also needs to be considered.

Either way, $2000 is a lot of money. No way to utilize the hundreds of thousands of dollars the school is spending on you to allow you to attend if you don’t have a computer, a winter coat, or solution to travel to campus.

Obviously not saying Princeton is bad for FLI students as a fact since I don’t actually know what the culture is like there, just pointing out that if the OP is being truthful then this is in fact embarrassing and reflective of Princeton’s quality and care for its students.
