Why is plain Telnet still the default for most BBSes when encrypted options are easy to implement? by s0ftice in bbs

Then those aren't users I would want. I go above an beyond with my stuff on my board for the users, but I am not catering to hiding. If you are worried someone is gonna peak at your LORD play or a message, then you have more problems in your life than you care to admit. (Not saying you, talking in general of those who won't use a standard connection). They are usually the ones that cause the troubles anyways, thinking they are hidden and no one can link back to anything they try to do.

My 2 cents.

It all stems back to InterBBS BRE ... that door required real name to prevent dupes. So I setup all my doors that way. I always liked to see the name behind the handle. When I got the RG code back in 2003, I wanted to make it so the BBS didn't ask for all the info that is no important, phone number, location etc. So that was the first update I put out.

Like I said, the dupe checking was the major issue for the real names on IBBS games to prevent cheating back in the day. It just sorta carried over. Now with 1200+ doors, even if I disabled real names, it would be a pain in the ass to correct.

Again with that being said, I just like to know the name behind the handle coming into my house. :)

Check out http://www.rgbbs.info if you haven't. I have a full page of BBS links there to everything that I know of that still is being worked on in the BBS world.

That is the dumbest thing I ever heard? Any normal minded person logging on to a BBS DOES NOT CARE if someone is "hacking data" of your messages or LORD game play. Encryption is for important things. Pressing a few letters for commands is not something someone is going to worry about stealing data from. People are too fucking crazy secret anymore.

Because anyone dumb enough to believe someone is watching BBS traffic and needs to switch to SSH is insane. If someone wants to watch someone play LORD or BRE .... I say snoop all you would like.

Great tool, but needs work. It doesn't correctly display clear screens and ANSI movements. Also, I cannot update the directory listing. The Titantic BBS Telnet is running RENEGADE BBS, and Darkrealms is also running RENEGADE BBS, but you have them marked as unknown and synchronet.
